After reading/hearing about the fiasco in Columbus, OH and the girls basketball state tournament, what is people's opinion of Instant Replay in KY?

Would it be accepted/welcomed in the Sweet Sixteen or not?

Didn't hear ! What happened ?

In the Ohio State Championship game, a girl made a layup as time expired to win the game 69-67. However, TV replays showed the ball did not leave her hand in time (.3 seconds). It was almost impossible to tell live. Therefore it should have went to OT. According to the NFHSA instant replay is not allowed. So the winning team (Mount Notre Dame) escaped OT and the losing team (Lakota West) gets to wonder what if forever.....

My question is, should Instant Replay be allowed to be used in State Tournament games where technology is abundant?

Without question it should be used but only under specific guidelines. Definitely should be used at the end of a game when it determines who wins. What a shame for a team to lose a state championship because of an error on the officials on a last second shot. I can see it being used also to determine a 3pt.shot controversy if it impacts the game in the last minute of the game. I am in favor of it but only towards the end of a game. If it was used throughout the game, it would take too long to complete the game.

Well it would sure open a big can of worms ! I know most hate to see a game end on a whistle with a player on the line. They would have to deside where replay could and couldn't be used. In the end every shot and every foul has an effect on the outcome , so where and how would the line be drawn ? And who would make that call ? I'm sure the losers would like to use it. I guess in some situations it would be useful.

Here is the article and link to watch the video of the ending of the game......

think about the losing players.......

IMO with all the technology we are blessed with, it is a shame that in the biggest game of the year, the wrong call was made. Maybe they lose in overtime, but at least they had a chance to win or lose....

However, I do agree there should be stipulations. Not coaches getting red flags to throw on the court. But a situation like this could have been avoided with Instant Replay!

I watched the vidio and the ball was still in her hand when the light came on. What a shame.

TV replays showed the ball did not leave her hand in time (.3 seconds).

The ball must be released prior to 0.0 not .3 seconds remaining. However, it sure looks like it is in her hands when the clock expired.

I agree, I was trying to say that the tv experts were saying it was in her hand .3 seconds AFTER the buzzer.....I typed that wrong, sorry....

Based on this reasoning anything that happens in the first 30 minutes of a game really isn't that imortant to get right. Doesn't EVERY basket impact the game? After watching replays it was almost impossible to tell if it was off in time, because no one could hear the buzzer on replay. The officials were closer than anyone, knew the buzzer was coming, and made the call. That's what they are there for. Keep replays out of high school games.

I don't disagree. I am more of a traditionalist. That is why officials are paid to make those calls. But it is worth a discussion with the technology that we currently have. The thing is, these kind of calls aren't ordinary. Things are normally not that close to call. In a game like that, it would be hard to be the coach on the losing side. Or the Seniors that worked so hard to get there and then have that dream possibly dashed. With KY being so steeped in tradition, is it even a remote possibility?

Bring it in for buzzer shots only.

I remember in the state tournament one year (boys) I believe Hopkinsville was playing someone, and a kid goes up for a lay-up to win the game as time expired. The refs ruled it as good, and they won that game by 2 points. On the front page of the paper the next day, the picture showed the ball still clearly in the boys hand as the scoreboard lit up and the clock read 0.0. They ended up losing in the next round anyway, but it just makes you wonder what could or would have happened if things would have went the other way.

Well, being from the "old school" of officiating, we did not have any instant replay available, even in Division One, until recently. Even now, there are conferences that have no replay capabilities (although it is changing from what I can gather).

Mainly the reason high school cannot go to it is because of consistency. Granted you have more technology available during the tournaments (usually), but the officials would have no idea how to use the equipment correctly (most of the time). During the regular season it just would not work due to the technological barriers to most schools.

It is not that difficult to look at a tape and decide good or no good. The trouble I see is having the angles (clocks ect) available and the replay capabilities.

I think that the replay should be used in district seeding games, the state tournament, as well as the district and region tournaments.
