They will have one of the strongest offenses in the state but not sure if they will be able to stop a lot of people.

I'd like to see them continue implimenting the Pistol formation. Kinda still something not a lot of folks are used to seeing, and I'm a fan of the Nevada Wolf Pack, so it was fun for me to watch it at the state championships this past season.

I understand your skepticism about their defense. LCA lost 7 starters on defense. The returning starters are the 2 cornerbacks (Walls and Burdette) and 2 of the 4 linebackers (Hayden and Barnett).

 

6 others saw a good amount of playing time, but it is hard when you lose that many starters.

 

However, at the beginning of each of the past 2 seasons I have had my doubts about our defense, and each year they have pleasantly surprised me as the season progressed. So I will withhold judgement for a while.

I really doubt LCA will make it back to Papa Johns this season but I expect for them to win it in 2009. They will have to play at Raceland in the regular season, at Hazard in the playoffs. In 2009 the really good sophmore group from this year will be seniors. They will have multiple home games in the playoffs. I look for Hazard to be playing in Papa Johns if they don't get alot of injuries. LCA will score some points but the defense will be suspect.

They apparently lost the defensive coordinator, as well as his assistant/special teams guy. I guess with so many new players to the defense it won't be so bad to get a new D coordinator, but I felt they did a decent job the last couple of years against some high powered offenses. And even though getting beat 38-35 in the championship by Beechwood, I believe they held beechwood to the lowest, or one of the lowest rushing outputs of their season. Can anyone confirm that???

Beechwood towered over LCA's whole defense, that must be a feat in itself to hold a team like that to a low rushing total (for their standards).

Beechwood towered over LCA's whole defense.

The rumor is that a lot of the kids will be attending Tony Franklin's football camp this summer.

 

From the very beginning, when coach Rains first arrived, he was able to encourage a good portion of the players to attend a summer football camp together. That type of "immersion" into a football system really gives the players a headstart in gelling as a team. I hope it's as successful this year as it has been in the past.

Don't count them out too fast. I thought they were done when they lost the big Senior class with the elder Hayden and company. But it wasn't so, they still came back loaded and put up some numbers.

With the addition of Ray Graham to the staff, their defense will be really good. Ray has always done a good job and that will only help LCA get back to the turf!:thumb:

What I hope for are some changes in the Special Teams.

 

Beechwood scored TDs on a kickoff return and a punt return; plus blocked an LCA punt for a safety. Special Teams accounted for 16 Beechwood points (including the PATs). In a 3 point loss, that was critical.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, myself and several others were saying that LCA would be a major contender. We were bashed by several saying things like, "What has LCA done to prove themselves". Now people, out side the LCA program, are predicting them to make it back to the finals.

 

I'm still waiting on some apologies. Not holding by breath, but waiting.

 

LCA is going to be very good again this year, they lost several major contributors, but none the less, they will be very good. I, honestly, predict that LCA, Raceland, and Hazard will be be the major contenders to make the finals this year from the east side of the bracket. I said this as well last year, with Pikeville being in the mix, and people said that I was speaking with my heart, and not be objective. Raceland gave LCA their closest game until the finals.
