March 11, 200818 yr Why do teachers take issue with CATS but their association - KEA consistently fights changes to it? When will teachers stand up to their own organization and say enough and stop. KEA is against Senate Bill 1. Virtually all teachers who speak out are for Senate Bill 1. Go figure. I feel that neither KEA or NEA represents a good # of teachers and are just Democrat mouthpieces that never truly consider candidates. Many, many teachers today either are not members of either or simply join for the liability insurance.
March 11, 200818 yr I agree, plus it's way to subjective. We had a student that we gave a distinguished on their portfolio. They didn't agree and knocked it down to a novice. We questioned this and resubmitted it to the state to rescore. After 7 different scorers (trained by the state department) they decided it was a proficient. (2 scorers gave it a novice, 2 a distinguished, 1 proficient and 2 apprentice). If the rubrics and guidelines are so exact, how would this happen. This is what I questioned with the assessment department of KDE, but they just give you the run around if you ask questions like this. :creepy: A nearly identical situation happened to us several years ago when we were audited.

You may like a movie and think it is Oscar material. TBG may think it is the worse movie in the world. Owlz may think it is okay but overrated. 3 people seeing the same movie and thinking 3 different things.
March 11, 200818 yr I feel that neither KEA or NEA represents a good # of teachers and are just Democrat mouthpieces that never truly consider candidates. Many, many teachers today either are not members of either or simply join for the liability insurance. Now think about that statement for a minute. As a taxpayer I wonder, why would teachers not join, at least at the state level and make changes? Why as a taxpayer we should consider the issues for teachers if they cannot or will not change their own advocacy positions? But, teachers may elect to use the benefits for them?! Do you not see the inconsistency of this message? Perhaps you may start to see why the public gets a little unconcerned about the issues at hand. Your own profession is not focused on what should happen. But, there has to be teachers who are members, otherwise they would not have the funding or the support! I suggest if all teachers felt this way, join and overtake by vote the organization. As you well know, KEA already has a lock on many policies at the state level.

As a scorer, I may hate a piece, but have to give it a proficient (or other) score, based on the scoring criteria. Portfolio scorers are not just random opinion. As such, you wouldn't think that a portfolio would score both novice and distinguised, based on said criteria (when scored by the "state" auditors).
