As for why this is coming out now ... it's my understanding that the NCAA rule is that an athlete can't apply for the sixth year until the fifth year is completed.

 

At least that's the way the process used to work ... the rule could have been changed in recent years.

 

The only athletes that I can remember that were granted a sixth year did so because they had legitimately catastrophic injuries that cost them two full years. The best example I can remember is Evan Eschmeyer, the onetime center at Northwestern who missed two years with leg injuries, I believe.

 

I always wondered if Sam Bowie considered making such a request or whether he was already committed toward turning pro after the 1983-84 season.
