16th Region Tournament Attendance

Anybody know why Raceland didn't bring their band?

Because they didn't have Greenup band members there to play with them as they did in the distict.

They've won one title in 19 years. Doesn't seem to be too much of an advantage.

Next week in two days of play , after attending school all day somebody is going to ride a bus for a total of 6 hours. I would think Ashland or Rose Hill would be thrilled to play at Boyd or Greenup Co. I would give another team home court advantage to save all that bus time. An hour and a half each way on a school bus gets old quick !:thumb:

Why quote me? I never said riding a bus for two hours was good. I simply said playing at Morehead hasn't been much of an advantage for Rowan County.

What teams in the 16th Region drive an hour and a half?

JMO the bus ride has to be a disadvantage. Ashland, Rose Hill ,Greenup Co., Raceland, Russell all have very close to 1 1/2 hr. bus ride on a school bus.

The same argument can be made for schools like Bath, Menifee, Fleming, Morgan and Rowan going to Greenup or Boyd. While those schools have gyms that have hosted regionals in years past, both are "tired" facilities. MSU is the best venue in the region. NO HOMER GYMS...may the 16th never fall into the 10th region trap of having to play their regional tournaments year in and year out on a member school's home court.

Well no kidding ! So we keep it at MSU. Make the same teams make the trip every year. Some will drive short distances and the usual will drive about 1 1/2 hrs. Thats fair!

They must be driving the bus in reverse. No way Rose Hill or Ashland has a 1 1/2 hour drive. With the Industrial Parkway, I doubt the others have much over an hour, if that.

I guess you make that drive on a school bus all the time ? One hr. twenty minutes even with Industrial Parkway , at best !

Lookit, Hookey....I appreciate you point of view, but it ain't happenin'. MSU is a stellar facility on the campus of a regional university - a Division 1 facility. I played back in the day when the regional tournament was held at 'Summitt Junior High' (now Boyd Co. Middle School). It was a great facility for the 70's and probably better than the old Wetherby Gym at MSU so it made sense. (By the way, Wetherby was University Breckinridge's home court back then). But, today, Greenup, Raceland and Boyd's facilities are really no match to Ellis T. Johnson Arena - and, it's a neutral site.

Yes, the eastern end of the region has to travel 60-75 minutes to get there, but it really is the best scenario for the region.

I've also been a proponent that the 61st District should move their tournament to Wetherby Gymnasium permanently - another neutral site within the district.

Also, I bet if you surveyed the kids playing, they look forward to playing at this facility. Some fans (not all) in Greenup and Boyd Counties might grumble, but I bet the players love it.

:thumb: I bet your right.

Dfenz ,I will continue to make the trip to MSU as always. I would like to see it more centrally located though. Hoping to see KCC build a new facility in the future that would house the crowd. Don't take what I said as a complaint cause I'll be there where ever they play it. If you read another post you may see somebody in the 10th grumble a little for the first time in many many years, since theirs was moved this year. Thanks for the history lesson but the first time I made a trip to MSU on a school bus , Summit Middle School was not even a dream. :thumb:

I don't see how Greenup Co. can be considered to host the regional tournament. I believe when I was there for districts this year, I seen a sign that said capacity was 4100. Although there wasn't 4100 people at the first round games, I think we can expect that plus more for the Elliott Co./Rose Hill match-up.

I also wanted to add that the size of Rowan Counties crowd doesn't provide for much of a home court advantage. I realize that MSU is in the middle of Morehead, but they probably practice there maybe 2-3 times before the regional tournament so they aren't much more familiar with the court then any of the other teams in the region. MSU is the best possible place for the 16th Region Tournament to be held, hands down.
