There are 5 or 6 coaches in the 14th that could have taken Cox,Collins, and Short and waltzed thru the tourney. Not trying to bash a young man but there are 25 kids that could have scored 3000 points if they were allowed 30 shots a game. The best group of athletes did not win last night but the best team did. Great job by LCC and Coach Justice. I sure wouldn't want to play LCC very deep into the regional tourney.

Perfect example of why they are five players instead of two. 1000 assist? Second quarter, fast break, Stepp has the ball, TEAM MATE ahead of him OPEN, what does he do? Looks at him proceeds to the basket and turned it over. Guess that was assist 1001.....

 

Someone needs to explain to the JBS stat man that a missed shot that is rebounded and put back in doesn't count as an assist.

I always believed that JBS had the tools to be a state champion contender. They had size, great shooters, good ball handlers, and a couple good role players off the bench. The only problem was they didn't use all the tools together. BUT, not to take anything away from LCC. They have been playing as good as anyone coming into the tournament. This was the toughest district in the 14th and either LCC or Cordia could very well win the region.

If Cox and Collins had been allowed to be more involved in the offense, then JBS wins the region. They were the keys to JBS success and when they get left out, JBS doesn't win. Just my opinion. Letcher Central does have a great team and has a chance to win the region, but I believe JBS could have repeated if they involved these two young men more.

 

One of my best friends who sees both these teams regularly predicted a month ago that this could happen, and for just the reasons you mention. He was also very doubtful Clark Stepp would be successful at the next level unless one of his relatives is on the coaching staff.

Agreed. He is a good high school player but the next level is for education and not basketball for that young man.

Shame one of the most talented teams in eastern Kentucky doesent have an oppotunity to go to region or state. If they would have played team ball they would have easily won the region. Im not a JBS fan by any means and am glad they got beat out. This imo makes the road easier for my Dores. Do the Stepps keep coaching now that the great Clark Stepp is going d-1 or whatever?

 

I think any players that read this board should take this as a lesson. Playing selfish and worrying about #1 only will get you no where. Great players only accomplish something if they're team accomplishes something. You can take that 3000 points, 1000 assists and toss them in the garbage b/c they mean nothing without showing them off at Rupp. This may be the reason Stepp hasn't gotten a look from bigger d-1's if any. Selfishness is learned and enabled.

I agree, I'd take those players in a heartbeat. Collins could be the most dominant player in the region if someone would teach him some post moves and work with him a little. I have a hard time believing that Stepp has over 1000 assists in his career. I've watched him play many times and probably not seen 10 assists combined in all those games.

Well, Stepp did play at Rupp last year ...

 

Still, the point is valid. It seems to be pretty widespread thought that team goals were sacrificed for individual accomplishments.

 

Stepp is a good player, but from what I saw of them, he's not the best guard on the team. And the big kid has some potential, which goes largely untapped because June Buchanan hardly ever looks to get the ball to him.

Congrats to LCC. Banks, Blair, Proffitt, Longworth, Reynolds, and Ison play together. Team is valued. Three years of hard work is paying off. Do I feel sorry for JBS? NO, they have had their time in the limelight. Jbs has talent, but that isn't everything.

 

Third game and LCC learned from the past two. Double figure leads got away from them in the first two and this time they held it.

 

Game with Cordia will be a doozy on Sat night. Toughest district in the mountains and winner and loser will have say on the region title.

Hazard should win the 14th. They were the best team, IMO, but with JBS out of the picture, they should be a really heavy favorite now.

LCC was defeated by Hazard at Hazard in OT. Cordia will be tough to handle as well. PCC on home floor, will not fold.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were better next year...JBS, that is.

 

Hazard and PCC are almost always contenders in the 14th, and often they're the top two teams...Leslie and Buckhorn have had their moments, but they aren't consistent.

 

Breathitt County had a pretty good run going until their latest coaching change/political appointee...now they're not even good enough to be considered a pretender, much less a contender.

 

Knott Central has been down for a while, but prior to that, they were right up there almost every season as a front-runner...you'd think they'd get back sooner or later.

 

Letcher Central should be pretty good with the teams that consolidated...that is a solid district. Knott Central, Letcher Central, JBS and a surprising Cordia team. However, Cordia is like Buckhorn...they've had their moments, but are usually not in the picture. JBS is on a nice run right now...but will it last past the next two seasons.

 

Historically, I'd definitely take Hazard, PCC, Knott Central and Breathitt every year vs. the field and win more often than not. Of course, I'd say most regions are like that.:thumb:
