If you see nothing wrong with special interest groups dumping million dollar donations into Kentucky gubernatorial campaigns to influence legislation, that is certainly your right. However, I believe that it is symptomatic of a broken system.

 

I also believe that voters should have been made aware of Yung's donation before casting their votes in November. People get the government that they deserve and apparently most Kentuckians are not bothered by the appearance of corruption as long as a Democrat wins the election.

Yung did not donate $1 million without expecting something in return and I for one do not believe that Beshear's strong support for casino gambling is a coincidence. If I had evidence of a crime, then I would have already contacted the FBI.

We will just have to agree to disagree. In my book corruption crime. Not all bribes are illegal. Neither one of us are ever likely to know for sure whether there was a quid pro quo agreement between Beshear and Yung. The donation has the appearance of impropriety, which is why so many newspapers across the country deemed the story newsworthy.

You act as if this doesn't happen with every candidate? It's really not a big deal. It's just people already trying to find something that Beshear is doing, or has done wrong. Not a big deal at all.

 

He supported making casino gambling legal in Kentucky, of course a casnio executive is going to support his candidacy. Don't lobbyists for companies and interest groups make donations all the time trying to persuade a candidate or politician to do them a favor all the time?

I too think Beshear was bought and paid for by Yung. It stinks to high heaven but it certainly is not illegal and as pointed out above, it's not even that uncommon except for the high percentage of Beshear's total campaign it represents.

Neither of us know but there isn't even the slightest evidence to imply that there was a quid pro quo agreement between Beshear and Yung other than the fact that Yung made a huge donation.

 

I'm sure Yung wanted Beshear to win, simply based on the fact that Beshear's main campaign point was to legalize gambling in Yung's home state. Yung being a casino owner, OF COURSE he wants that candidate to win.

 

Regardless, it's not like Beshear can automatically make casino gambling legal in Kentucky. It's a long process and all he can do is make it possible. It's not in his hands after that, so a bribe would be useless and stupid.

 

The same papers that deemed the story appropriate or newsworthy point out that donations of $1 million and more are becoming more and more common in state elections. What say you about that? This is not really uncommon elsewhere, why should it be here?

Fletcher's hiring decisions and this situation are totally different. Beshear did NOTHING wrong. There is not even the slightest evidence to suggest that Beshear did something corrupt. These two situations should not be talked about in the same thread because they're completely different.

 

Fletcher OBVIOUSLY did something wrong and it was proven.

 

Beshear received a large donation and a few newspapers point out that it was from a Casino exec. Wow...who cares? It's not illegal, and it only suggests that the Casino Exec wanted a Governor in office that would do his best to legalize casino gambling. End of story.

As I recall, most Fletcher critics focused on hypocrisy because they could not deny that the Democratic governors who preceded him engaged in the same hiring practices. Apparently it is OK to rake in $million donations from out of staters seeking to influence Kentucky's legislative agenda because cleaning up state government was not a cornerstone of Beshear's campaign.

 

Thank God Beshear did not set himself for allegations of being a hypocrite! Gov. Beshear can now deliver the kind of government for which his supporters have paid. :lol:

As I said before, I oppose all limits on campaign spending. I would prefer that slimeballs like Yung write checks directly to Beshear's campaign and that Beshear were required to immediately disclose the contribution.

 

People should know who pays for a candidate and make their voting decisions accordingly. So far it looks like Yung's investment in Beshear has been worth the money. Beshear is working hard to scare up the votes necessary to make Yung's dream a reality.

Didn't you say earlier in the thread that Beshear ALREADY supported casinos before Yung's donation? Methinks you're missing the smoking gun here.
