Dayton 74 Villa 72

Final

Dayton has had a couple of big wins to end the year, defeating Calvary last Thursday who had beat them twice prior and then Villa tonight which beat them by 20 earlier this year.

It was a very exciting game to watch. Dayton took an early lead and led at the end of the first quarter by 7 and then took that 7 point lead into halftime up 40-33. Villa fought back though and cut the lead to a few points by the end of the third. With about 4 minutes left Villa took their first lead of the night at 64-62. A minute later Ryan Brownfield, Dayton's second leading scorer fouled out when he went to pin Blake Bryan's lay up. Things looked bad for Dayton when Bryan made both to put Villa up 4. However they fought back to take a 71-70 lead. On the next posession Villa was fouled on a drive and they made one of two to tie it at 71. Dayton preceded to turn it over with a walk, but came up with a big defensive stop when Blake Bryan's runner rolled off the rim with 40 seconds left and Timmy Massey came down with the board for Dayton. They ran it down to 12 seconds before attacking with a high screen and roll when Massey kicked it out to senior Chris Young, who is known much more for his passing abilities than scoring, who spotted up and knocked down the 3 with 6 seconds left. Shawn Eastin intercepted the inbounds pass at half court but stepped across the mid court line giving the ball up again. Villa inbounded to Love who was immediately fouled. He made the first and then Villa was called for a lane violation on the second. With 1.1 left Dayton threw it towards half court and Blake Bryan's prayer bounced off the front rim, which was way too close for any Dayton fan's comfort. All in all an outstanding game by both teams

Shawn Eastin led Dayton with 19. Blake Bryan and Stephen Love had 24 and 25 for Villa...

Dayton may well have shaken up the top of the DIII standings with these last two victories and they seem to be rolling going into that once in at decade district match up with Bellevue for a shot at going to the regional.

Dayton ended the regular season at 11-15, an improvement over last years 10-16 and the prior years 6-19. Steady improvement down in the river city.

Big Win for the Dayton Greendevils!

Glad to see the hard work and perseverance of this group pay off.

Calvary and Villa are quality Division III wins.

Best of luck to Coach Dilts and his squad heading into the "winner take all" contest with the Bellevue Tigers!

Great to hear. The best of luck to Tom Dilts' Devils next week.

Great job Devils. Congrats to Coach Dilts, his staff and most of all his players.

Nice to hear the Devils got a hard fought win. Dilts is making positive changes down there and it sounds like they have a lot of young talent. I think the Bellevue game in Districts will be a battle out at Highlands. I may have to go watch that one.

It was a great game. Villa couldn't buy a basket in the first quarter and the Greendevils came out on fire.

Villa got two good looks at the end. Love's three with a second or two left and Bryan's steal and half court shot with 1.1 seconds left.

Great game Greendevils good luck against Bellevue.

How about a DIII rematch in regionals?

:thumb: Sounds good to me but remember you both got to get there. Better not overlook those 1st round opponents.

I agree.

Let me rephrase that: How about a Bellevue/Dayton vs. Villa/Ludlow match up in the regionals.

I know its very, very, very unlikely but it would be fun.

It would also be fun to hear all the bigger schools whine about it.

Love's 3 with a few seconds left was actually after a foul on the floor. He was fouled as soon as he caught it and tried to draw the shooting foul but only was on the line for the 1 and 1.... Bryans half courter was VERY close....

I was told that to begin the game both teams had an agreement to let the Brummett kid from Dayton who is out with the ACL actually "start" the game, as it was senior night, and then was replaced as soon as the tip was caught... Can anyone confirm this? If so, it was a highly classy move by both teams to let the kid "start" on his senior night after a all those years of hard work. Never good to see a kid end his career with injury...

I was going to say, did Brummett play?? Is Brownfield back???

Congrats to Coach Dilts and the GreenDevins on two huge wins in DIII.:thumb:

Brummett is out for the season he had sugury on his ACL about a month ago...

Brownfield plays "as tolerated" with problems with both ankles, but he is playing...
