McCreary Co. 83 Somerset 69

Featured Replies

McCreary had an easy time defeating Somerset tonight. Somerset’s last two games were against the top two 12th region teams. But in my opinion Somerset should have won both of them. Lincoln and McCreary do not have an inside game, except dribble penetration. Both teams are, dribble penetrate or shoot the three. I will admit both are good at it, but it should not beat Somerset. I would rather face McCreary or Lincoln in the first game of the region, (if Somerset even gets that far), than play Rockcastle Co., Pulaski Co., Wayne Co., or Boyle Co.

Somerset was not aggressive in the first half tonight against McCreary Co. they committed way too many unforced turnovers while just passing the ball across half court and just passing it around the three point line. It is a different story if you are attacking the basket and turning the ball over but most of Somerset’s turnovers were routine passes.

Tonight against McCreary Bourne got the ball inside 2-4 times in the first half. Most of Somerset’s shots were from the outside; most were open, but most missed. In the second half Bourne got the ball a lot, nearly every time it resulted in a foul or points or both. If Bourne had received the ball in the first half like in the second it would have been a different ballgame. Half of McCreary’s players would have fouled out and Somerset would have had a better shooting percentage. Price also did a better job with dribble penetration in the second half. Somerset’s whole team played more aggressive also.

Here is my solution to beat Lincoln and McCreary Co. (at least on the offensive side):

1. Play an aggressive defense the whole game.

2. Do not take a long outside shot, three or otherwise, unless the ball has been inside first, even if you are wide open. If the ball goes inside first, even if a shot is not available, and then comes back out the majority of the time it will result in a higher percentage shot then would have occurred if it hasn’t been inside. It will also place Somerset in better rebounding position.

3. There also needs to be more dribble penetration by Somerset. Whoever can beat their man, or can rub off a screen, Price, Dockery, Coomer, Fitzpatrick, Wallen or whoever else needs to get in as deep as possible and shoot a layup, or 10-12 footer, or pass deeper inside, or pass back outside for a three. There always needs to be an outlet back out if a shot is not available.

4. Bourne, or whoever else is posting up inside needs to get the ball every trip down the floor, (if a fast break is not available) or there needs to be dribble penetration by the guards, forwards. The post man needs to post up strong and good decisions need to be made passing inside, and as much time taken as needed to get it there, if they double or triple before the entry pass, that should open up dribble penetration.

5. If the ball gets inside as often as it should, Somerset’s post man will get doubled or tripled nearly every time they get it, if a high percentage shot is not available it needs to be passed out for an open shot or to be set up again.

6. That is the offense, fast break, post inside, dribble penetration, three pointer (only after the ball has been inside).

You need to get a coaching job and since you know the teams really well.

Jones,Jackson, Thacker and Woods one out of the group might need your help.

I agree getting the ball in to Bourne is the best option for the Jumpers but if you are passing up open shots on the perimeter it's just going to get harder and harder to get the ball inside. Unless Price, Wallen and Coomer can be more consistent in scoring from the outside opponents are just going to smother Bourne inside. I like the idea of using Price to penetrate but generally that results in him shooting instead of dishing underneath to an open man or getting it back outside for an open shot from the perimeter.

I do agree that getting the Ball to Tyler Bourne down low is by far the best option for the Jumpers to be successful and for the most part they have done pretty well at that. But If you are referring to Price as being a selfish player or anything of that sort then you dont watch many of Somersets games.. Having to play the point this year has limited his scoring oppurtunities greatly, and I do believe he drove the lane and kicked it out to an open man several times tonight for a three.. yes he shot several times tonight but they werent bad shots, they were going in werent they? The game before, against Lincoln County, he only took 5 or 6 shots for the entire game..

Now, the Jumpers arent in that bad of shape.. There last 3 losses have been to the regions top 3 teams, and 2 of them on the road.. They still have a shot at this thing..

The Jumpers are done. They have completely folded again after the All A Tourney. They are now 1-4 with that lone win coming against Monticello. Yes 3 of those games have been to the top 3 teams in the 12th Region but they've lost all those games by at least 13 points. If you want to be considered a regional contender you have to beat some of the other contenders. Somerset's season ended with their loss to Murray--Cumberland will beat them at the Patch on Friday and Rockcastle will win by double digits at home leaving the Jumpers at 1-6 since Richmond. I hope I'm wrong about this but it doesn't look good.

This game wasn't in doubt much, however, in the fourth, the Jumpers did make a run. The game was tied at 16 after the first, but during the second McCreary opened up an 18-point lead and led by 12 at half. The Raiders also opened another 18-point lead in the 3rd and Somerset fought back again. I think this was a very fair called game with both teams getting controversial calls. Somerset fought back but could never get any closer than about 6 or 7 points.

Good win for the Raiders.

Good win for Coach Jones and his Raiders.

Were you at the same game I was? Number 10 and 32 should have fouled out during the first half, but wait, they didn't foul out at all....#10 getting a technical in the last quarter was just a little too late. Bourne rarely gets knocked down but during this game he was on the floor more than all of the other games together this season. Watts can shot the ball and play basketball, the other players should be on the football team(does MC have a football team). This was one of the roughest and dirtiest played games the Jumpers have had all season, which you can expect sometimes when you travel but to be insulting and say it was a fair called game??? I think we were all thankful that no one got hurt and that the Jumpers played well. :thumb:

Let's take a look at the foul calls.

First Half:

McCreary - 9

Somerset - 11

Second Half:

McCreary - 12

Somerset - 10

Somerset got every 50/50 call there was in this game. #20 for Somerset should have fouled out in the first quarter, much less the 4th. The refs let both teams escape with a lot of fouls, however. Somerset rides the opposing players a lot, and were rarely called for anything - I mean the Jumper were basically attached to the hip and back of McCreary players. I think you always look at it different whenever it's your team. No, if you were a Casey fan just sitting there and watching the game, you wouldn't have seen a difference in what calls were or weren't being called.

its basketball, not tag. Somerset couldn't match the physical play of McCreary, and its just something the raiders are known for. They play physical game in and game out, and IMO makes up for the inside game.

I think the Jumpers would be more than happy to play the Raiders on the gridiron. ;) I wasn't at the game Jumpermom but the foul count was even and Somerset was on the road playing a good team. With the same number of foul calls that wasn't the reason Somerset lost the game--the two teams decided the game, not the Refs. I hope the Jumpers get it turned around quickly before a promising season turns into a first round district exit. The players, coaches and fans should focus on that and move on.

All I can say about dirty play when it comes to athletes is that this is the "pot calling the kettle black". In the last 15 years of having my kids in sports Somerset players have been the dirtiest by far and the fans the rudest. However, the fans were very well behaved last night! Well done! Sorry I got off topic! The game was a very physical game but games only go how the refs allow them to go. If you looked at total fouls they were right at even and both teams got in the bonuses right at the same time. I know all of the players from McCreary and they are good kids who were playing in a rough environment and were just doing what was necessary to survive and win the game. As far as MC having a football team (ouch), yes they do thanks for asking. Actually # 22, 32, 21 and 23 were starters for the MC football team but sorry #10 did not play football. It's funny, someone from Corbin was just asking me the other day if Somerset had a football team. Well, I guess it is the way with life, you live it and learn from it. Good luck to the Raiders and the Jumpers in their district tournaments next week!

Never said that was the reason for a loss, just didn't take too kindly to anyone saying it was called fair. I was there, had McCreary been called for the type of fouls the Jumpers were called for, several players would have fouled out for MC and the foul calls would not have been so even. The Jumpers still are having some problems with turnovers and rebounds and that cost them the game but they looked much better last night. That's a positive.

KUDO's to Southern Sports Fan for his devotion to his team.

They must not be much of a football fan then since Corbin and Somerset played one of the most exciting football games in this part of the state last season and the Hounds escaped with a 56-47 win. Our 8th grade football Jumpers also beat the Hounds twice to win the conference title and our JVs beat them easily too. Feel free to forward that on to him. As for the basketball game sounds like it was a physical game where the refs let the kids play pretty much. Right now the district tourneys are all that really matter anyway.

The game was called even both ways, Somerset just couldn't match the physical play. Surprised you are complaining about the fouls when they are so evenly matched.
