February 21, 200818 yr I just can't understand the idea that some people feel that they have right to my money that I earn? Does that not bother anyone else? I do agree that at the current time taxes do pay for the military and roadways etc... and I have no problem with that. Just not a fan of handouts without accountability, which is basically what the government welfare program has become in many instances, enablers. have you heard this before: If you don't like paying U.S. taxes then leave?? Our nation is founded on the premise of citizenship, equality, protecting others, protecting ourselves, etc. We are a capitalistic country not a free market economy. if someone needs help, yes it would be nice for a church or neighbor to help but in practicality that doesn't work.

I would disagree with that. We don't do it enough in this country, but to say it doesn't work is a little far reaching, IMO. Look at other societies within our society. The Amish definitely make it work. They show up in masses and build a barn over a weekend together when a neighbor needs it.

This scenario of church & neighbor relief would not work to help rebuild New Orleans, to help hurricane/tornado/earthquake ravaged areas, or to help with devastating forest fires. We would be in the same situation we are now. A few would give but others would say, "it is not my responsibility to help others that have not helped themselves." This is traditional/historical HAVE VS. HAVE NOT PHILOSOPHY. the have's are in that position b/c they are better & do not feel it is there place to help those that are less fortunate b/c they haven't done what they should with their time, resources, changes, etc. Using Shaq again. I dont think Shaq has the personality to give $100,000 of every $1 million that he gets to a charity, church, etc. I might be wrong but I dont see Shaq freely giving that $$ up if he had a choice.

I remember reading that in the Decelaration of Independence! Line 2 or was it line 3 article 4, no, no, wait, where does it say, I will give my brother a helping hand:confused:

This is the key word, this is why I must be a little bit libreal (sp) I believe that people must make choices, not to be forced, and that again includes the pocket book.

I would agree that it does not work because the mentality of the people wouldn't allow it to work. I would also counter that a lot of relief and work was done because of churches. I lost my house in a flood and I can first hand account tell you that it was cleaned and the flood mud removed by a church that had nothing to do with me and I knew no one in that church. It is part of my testimony as they drove past about 50 homes and said that something told them to stop at my house and help. My son was sick and the doctor was wanting to put him in the hospital. My dad was in the hospital having heart surgery. My wife lost her grandfather in the flood. And I was very, very overwhelmed. And God sent this group from a church that had no reason to stop at my house, to my house. I never had to shovel one shovel of mud. God took care of it all. One of the reasons why I KNOW that there is a God and he fulfills His promise to take care of us. Cause he did it in my life.
February 21, 200818 yr Is it better to give a hungry person a fish, or to teach them to fish? To give for short term help and for long term help teach them to fish. So, I would answer both.
