You can invest that amount and try and turn them around or have the cost later when they are consistently in the courts and prisons for crimes they have committed.

I do not think that there should be much cost in the prison system, let them that break the law, do something like "the dirty dozen" movie, be responsible for oneself. The only cost should be guards.

No food or healthcare? Well, I guess if they don't get food, they wouldn't need healthcare for long anyway.

While your prison system may be more effective, it is never going to fly that way in this country.

 

Like the old Midas commercial said, "You can pay me now or pay me later." The cost of these kids are going to come out at some point. Whether it is now and try to catch them before they dropout and commit crimes (although not every dropout automatically becomes a criminal).

All well and good, but at what cost? Do you have any idea what the cost in an alternative setting is vs. a regular classroom? Should our best and most motivated students not get the same amount of money spent on them? If you don't know the cost in the alternative setting is probably 3 times as much as a regular setting. What is fair about that?

 

It's going to cost you more later. They way we did it was to spread the cost among five districts and use a former school building for the facility. Now granted, in KY you'd have to spread it out among several counties but IIRC it really didn't cost that much. The students' books were brought over from their main school, teachers sent out assignments, etc. The districts were pleased with the results and kept it going for several years until the state cut a huge chunk of the budget for statewide alternative school programs.

Not necessarily, I serve one county and one high school.

I still say deconsolidate, increase teacher pay (to get the quality of teachers that people want). All of this is a cost but my what the rewards could be...
