I agree 100% answerthebell, BUT they shouldn't be able to do this.

You just never know what kids or parents will do until its time. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. However, I don't think they will be much changing and for the most part things will unfold as they should. As for kids already in the 9th grade the rules will not allow them to change schools or they will face the normal penalty. As far as the 8th graders I think in the end they will end up at the new school because it is the obvious choice. Now they will be the exception every now and again and I am sure in 08 it will not be any different. Why you ask wideopen? Well they are several reasons and most all are wrong. In the world we live in today both parents and kids are looking for the easy way out and for what they can get right now! Kids will look down the road and think I can play or start varsity right now and I am wanting to average 30 a game or carry it 40 a game and thats all that is important. The ones who go down the road for the most part are the ones who are more concerned with number 1 instead of the team. Basically, kids have two choices here in this county. 1. Go to the new high school and work to get better and be a part of a team that has a chance to do great things and be able to compete with teams outside of these walls. Which will take something that reguires hard work. Or number 2. go down the road show up and start and score 40 a game having a losing record but get individual awards. I might of overstated just a little but you get the point!

I'm sorry but Harlan Ind has had winning records 5 of the last 9 years. They have won 2 district titles, came in second in the district twice, and went to the regional finals.

 

I am happy to see the new school. I think it will hurt some of the communities that revolve around their high schools, but that isn't the point. I am looking forward to seeing some possibly good football teams coming out of there, and also seeing some good competition come into the county to play. However, they haven't won a game yet. It is okay to have high hopes about your school but please don't insult another one which has done pretty well considering the talent fluctuations that occur in small 1-A schools.

 

I understand that your opinion of Harlan isn't high, but remember that some of the kids who play on that team (which is definitely in a dip in its power curve right now) still read this site. Good luck this season nevertheless.

 

BTW, do you think HC will ever play David Hensley’s Dunbar team in the near future? He usually schedules a team from E. Kentucky each year (last yr was Corbin, this year M-boro). Could be a nice match up…. Dunbar is definetly looking to be on the rise in the coming years too (they had good JV and freshman teams this past year).

ArmchairQB I really wasn't trying to take a shot at Harlan Ind. but I see how you could of reached that conclusion. Without going into much detail I think we all would get along much better if Harlan played with city kids. They are a lot of things going on as we speak to add conflict between the schools but this isn't the place to discuss that. As far as the kids go I am for kids regardless of the school they go to. As for Hensley I am hoping he takes the Pikeville job as mentioned on another thread. I really think the two would be a great fit and I think he would/could take them back to the finals before long.

 

As far as the district and 5 of 9 and all that, things are changing here in Harlan County like they have already in other parts of the state. With the new district that Harlan will be playing in and the players coming up for the next several years do you really think Harlan can compete in the new age. If your answer is the same as mine then how would you answer the question that was asked earlier. Why would kids transfer. It seems to me that numbers are as big a factor in today's teams as anything and most of the schools are going to be a lot bigger than Harlan. I would think that Harlan is going to be on the several year plan from here on out. They will play several years before they have 1 group that can compete and then play several more years. This is not a knock on Harlan but the way it is for the surrounding areas we live in. The only way to compete is to have numbers or to get the very best players? I don't know it is just my opinion! On the other hand maybe they will get the very best players only time will tell.

Why would kids go to Harlan City or Letcher Central?

I do not know what harlan has but Letcher seems to be a team on the rise. HC has not even played a game, that could be a reason.

I think that is almost a given if things hold true like in other areas but it will be a few years down the road.

I don't think they would JB is a great coach and a good guy.

 

I think it will be 3-4 years before everything cycles thru. I just think there will be a lot of ego trips with some kids. Hope this isn't the case because those kids deserve to do well just like every school does. I just hope it all works out for the kids, cause they are the ones that count.:thumb:
