The counselor I couldn't have said it any better myself. I think to say Verst is the best pitcher in the region is something to laugh at. He is a good pitcher, but nothing that is going to shut out a team completely. Like The counselor said he wont be 6-0 against top teams this year. All the good teams that brossart faced last year were thrown by Munch, and Euebel, so there is no excuse Verst should be 6-0 on nights he was facing Bracken Co. or Calvary Christian or the Grove or any of those small schools. He does a good job of keeping guys off balance but will not be mentioned as top in the region.

 

As far as the Post on Gray as a closer thats all he can be with this team, but mind you his fastball is an average speed fast ball at the varsity level, its not over powering like it would be at the JV level. He has a lot to prove, now if he can locate his fastball thats something different, but to really even call him a closer is going to be a stretch because like I said he doesn't have the speed to completely shut things down. What he does have is the mind set of a closer that just says heres my fastball hit it and goes after every batter he faces, which is a good thing. I also agree with you on the fact that they have some holes to fill on the infield this year but I think that their program has some good Jr's coming up to fill those holes, but the outfield will be STACKED, and I can't wait to see Studer perform some miracles in leftfield like he has been doing all his career, with a fast as lighting franzen in center field it will just give him more of an oprrotunity to go after balls.

He shut out Johnson Central (who did go to the state tournament at Applebee's) 10-0 and as I said earlier he beat the Kentucky Kings over the summer. I stand corrected CEO 1 win against 1 quality team means that you are the top pitcher in your region and should be on the all-american watch. Are you serious Verst was a no body when it came to thinking of who you were going to have to face when it came to playing brossart. Actually, Woodruff won 7 games last year for the Camels, more than Hurd and Bray combined. Bray didn't really have that good of a year last year, having arm problems in the early part of the season and control problems most of it as well.

 

Well I know for a fact that Hurd had six wins by himself. So you are saying Bray had none? If Hurd was used right he would of had a few more wins, he also had three or four saves.

Have to agree with you Old Soda, Woodruff in my mind last year was the top pitcher on the team, just the sure dominance he had on the mound compared to the years bray and hurd had, not taking anything away from them. I just expected a lot more out of the two for their senior seasons last year, esspecially with how they pitched their Jr. season and really the whole career for hurd. It's ashame to see so many high school kids have arm troubles because they only have a short time to play at the high school level.

 

Wow, you didn't see many games last year did you? Hurd had one fewer win than Jordan but led the team in strikeouts (76) which was third in NKY, era of under 1.80 which was among the leaders in NKY. And he was often matched up against the tougher teams. He also threw a no hitter against Newport.

Also led the team in hitting .467 after hitting over .500 most of the year. Also led in rbi"s,homeruns and runs scored. And earned team MVP.

Luke Bray is a much better pitcher than he showed last year and showed that during the summer.

The Camels are going to struggle with their pitching this year. Other Jordan Woodruff they don't have any proven starters, Hinkle doesn't throw very hard and Coffman is all over the place.

Also the Camels infield struggled alot last year. Hopefully the new infielders coming in this year are a little better.

Hurd never could win the big game, period. It got to the point where you knew going to a game if it was against a good team or the game meant something that if Hurd was pitching they would get beat. He would start off slow, get down early and the game would be over by the 3rd inning. He was a good pitcher, just never ended his career the way many thought he would. His little struggles his sophmore year you can point to say hey he was young. Then came the junior year and excuse could still be young with some nerves and finding himself as a pitcher on that level but everyone including myself thought at any time he would have that break out win either in that junior year or we would see it his senior year, and it never happened Hurd at Campbell county will be remember by a few that were able to watch him play in the 4 years he was there as a real good pitcher, nothing to retire a jersey over or anything like that, all he was, was a good high school pitcher and at most would be able to play at a small school else where. I respect the decision he has made though in not trying to play at a small school far from home just to play another 4 years and be done, better yet he is going to college at home and has better things in his mind and that is a degree, I think that is far better than what most kids go after, and everyone should be proud of that fact. It's a tough decision to make but he has made the right one thats for sure. A great decision by a great young man.

Ha. Mutsch never pitched against Harrison County in the regional. He pitched in the first round against St. Pats. Chris Simon pitched against Harrison in the regional semi-finals.

Please keep in mind there are 9 young men on the field during a high school game... you make it sound like he was the only player on the field for the Camels in those losing efforts. This past summer I saw him win some big games in some of the best tournaments in the country. It is surprising what happenens when you take an excellent pitcher and surround him with other excellent players ("Team"). He shut down the top team from Michigan in the Indian Bulls tournament and then 3 hit a team from Colorado (struck out 10) in the World Series in Nashville (most of the top 18U teams in the country). That Colorado team went on to win the Tournament. He wasn't just a good high school pitcher, has was an excellent high school pitcher, 1.80 E.R.A. and the leader in NKY in strikeouts, come on!. I coached at the DIII level and played at the D1 level and by the end of last summer he was throwing in the high 80's and could have gone to a lot of schools at almost any level and been very effective. He just chose not to do so.

Matt Coffman played for the Kentucky Kings this summer . . and the shortstop spot will be an interesting one this year for the Camels. The whole infield will be interesting on who plays where. Their speed in the outfield in undeniable. Also a JV semi-final appearance is not their goal, they want a trip and chance for regional title

Fill us in on what big games you are talking about. If you are talking about the District against Scott , he had that game won, actually he had the win and the save after the coach took him out and put him back in. Took him back out with a big lead only to have the pen lose it. Or maybe the year before when he lost to Brossart and only one run against him was earned.

Or this year when he had GRC beat only to lose 3-2 on 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

He has pitched with maybe the worst infielders I have seen on the varsity level, I don't like saying that because I know these kids very well. They will even tell you that. They actually had more errors than put outs. Hard to pitch when that happens.

Adams was not the #1 for Scott going into last year. He pitched the first game against Lloyd because Roberts was saving Bush for the first game of that tournament they went to. I hear so much "talk" about Zac Adams, but what has he really done? His sophomore year he pitched in 2 games against some weak teams and last year he pitched in a game and a half. Going into his senior year he has proven nothing in the high school season. Nothing. I agree he has alot of potential but potential is nothing until you use it. It's nothing against Zac. He has a great work ethic and a love for the game, but quit blowin smoke up the kids butt when he hasn't proven a single thing yet. I'll be rootin for him to see that potential come out in his senior year. I hope all this "talk" gets backed up with some actual results.

If you were at the banquet last year, he talked individually about each player on the team as they got up to collect their patch, achievements, etc. When he talked about Adams he said he was their #1 pitcher going into the season and he even told Adams the day before the first game of the season so you don't have all the information. Those are the facts.

 

However I do agree with you that he has done nothing really. In summer ball, he has been a terror to other teams and dominated. His sophomore year he didn't get to pitch much because he was only a sophomore and they were building up his confidence and exposing him to the varsity level. He pitched 5 games that year, going 2-1. He also pitched some JV too and I he dominated CovCath in the tourny and shutout Highlands earlier in the season too in the only 2 games he pitched for JV that year.

 

He did pitch in some quality games though and did very well. He pitched against Lloyd last year and had a shutout going into the 6th inning winning only 3-0 where there were some defensive errors and he wasn't getting run support. He was pulled after the 6th where a relief pitcher came in with the game 3-2 and he allowed them to tie but Scott scored in the next inning and Best came into close. He also pitched against Mason County that year, a quality team then, and won the game 8-7. Scott, if I remember correctly, had 6 errors that game with Adams on the mound and he did very well to stay in that game.

 

He did get some gimme games though like Bellevue and Calvary Christian though those were the best of teams at the time.

 

And if you ask all the kids on the team how he performed in practice his junior year before the injury, most would say that he was, as you said, very hard working and loves the game. In the intersquad scrimmage they all had trouble even touching him as the only one who I believe had a hit on him was Bush and he will be playing at Morehead State this fall.

 

I agree with you though that he does have alot to prove and as long as he is able to stay healthy and he is back to 100% for his injury, I think he will be able to do that and show the D1 potential he has.
