Augusta's Dustin "Shooty" Staggs made me a big fan. He earned my respect by appearing to accept his award.

I think that if u get picked u should at least show up.

Did they know before that night? IMO this is a ridiculous conversation, I mean seriously is it really that big of a deal?

All-tournament team: Kyle King (Deming), Kyle Campbell (Nicholas County), Dustin Staggs (Augusta), Steven Pelle (Silver Grove), Chris Owens (St. Patrick), Nick Anderson (St. Patrick), Devin Workman (Bracken County), Caleb Craft (Bracken County), Tiion Thomas (Paris), Joe Aprile (Calvary Christian), Chase O'Keefe (Calvary Christian), Jacob Rieger (Bishop Brossart), Joe Webb (Bishop Brossart), Greg Stortz (Bishop Brossart).

 

Just an observation. Very few of the recipients were present to receive their awards. Dustin Staggs may have been the only non-participant to be in attendance, and Coach Cary Barr accepted for the recipient from Paris. I was doing other things at the time of the presentations and may have missed someone.

 

I think that these recipients are selected by their respective coaching staffs. Out of respect to the Touchstone Energy folks who spend big bucks to sponsor this event and respect for the tournament itself, I would think that the honorees would make an effort to attend. I think that they would have been at Deming on Saturday night if their team was in the finals.

Totally agree. It was the same at Gallatin for the 8th Region.

 

No show's were Berry from Eminence, Jones from Walton, Anglin from Williamstown, I can't remember if Cody Kidwell from Trimble was there, but I don't think so.

 

Only one player that was not on Carroll or Gallatin showed.

Dustin Skaggs showed pride in himself and his school when he showed up in his school jacket and walked across that gym floor to accept the award that he played hard for during the tourney. His team may have not won - but IMO - he scored high points for himself and the school he represented that night.

Someone please tell me - did he also recieve the Academic award? Or was that the other young man from Augusta? I may not be from Augusta - but they obviously knew that they were up for 2 awards and represented well.

I can honestly say, that if my child was up for an award (win or lose) - then i would definately make the drive. Installing pride and reponsibility in one's kids is high priority in my book.

Side note - Calvary and Brossart played a hard fought game - both teams really gave it their all that night. They should be proud of their accomplishments.

It wasn't meant to be that big of a deal, and I don't want it to become one.

If any good comes of it, perhaps at the 10th Region Coaches Meeting preceeding next year's "A" it might be made a point of emphasis that each coach make an effort to have their All Tournament/All Academic recipients in attendance for the championship game. That would really be a nice touch.

 

Normally a representative of Touchstone Energy is there to present the trophies. If none of the players are there to receive them this could be viewed as disinterest and word could get back to the corporate folks who make the sponsorship decisions and foot the bills. Besides it's all part of the complete package of the "A" Regional Tournament.

My question would be when were the young men notified of the award? Who new the winners,ALL of the coaches? Who's responsibility is it to notify the winners? All players on all teams show up in case they are selected? Mustang,can you answers the questions? It certainly is an honor to recieve these awards!!!!!!!

No Ifs, Ands, or Buts about it.. If you are selected on the All Tournament Team then you should appear to accept your award. No excuses necessarty. The coaches know who is selected therefore they should appear and graciously accept the award.

Here's what I've learned over the past few days as a result of my comment - which incidentally, wasn't meant to be a personal attack on anyone, simply an observation.

 

The All-Tournament team is selected by the respective players' coaches. I don't think that is a great revealtion, nor talking out of school.

Preceeding each game the tournament director notified each coach of how many players he would have on the all-tournament team were they to be eliminated.

Whether the players were notified (Staggs obviously was) or not is speculation. The Deming player Kyle King, wasn't notified until 6pm of the finals night, and was already enroute to Lexington for another commitment.

 

The bottom line learning here is that each coach should be more vigilant in ascertaining that his team's player/players have been duly notified, with sufficient time to allow them to plan on attending the game.

I will personally make a point to discuss this with Cary Barr, the regional representative to the All "A", and make it a point of emphasis at their next meeting.

 

There is a proposal being discussed that the Girls and Boys 10th Region "A" site be flip-flopped annually between Bracken County and Paris, which might be more central to most teams and would make the site of the finals more convenient to all.
