January 4, 200818 yr I have no idea what the term really means. It seems to be a term invented and promoted by the media with negative connotations for the purpose of casting Christian conservatives in a negative light. But who knows. :thumb: It is a label. I would be labeled as an evangelical. I am guessing it is a Christian who allows their faith to guide their selection in the voting booth. The way the media uses it, you would assume that it is ONLY for those who vote Republicans or that Dems never use their faith to guide their selections in the policital process. I don't believe that, but I don't EVER remember the term being used in describing Democrats or support of Democrats. Has anyone heard or remember the media using the term Evangelical in Democrat support? What is a Christian who supports the left or Democrats called? I know they self-call themselves Red Letter Christians or Sojourners, as I get those daily webmails.
January 4, 200818 yr "Evangelism is the practice of preaching/spreading the Gospel of Jesus". You can be Evangelical about many different things. Before becoming a Christian believer I was an "evangelical atheist"; I thought it was my duty to enlighten my well-meaning, but mistaken Christian friends.
January 4, 200818 yr For the sake of debate... http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CAUCUS_POLL?SITE=OHCIN&SECTION=AMERICAS&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2008-01-04-04-23-01 Eight in 10 Huckabee supporters said they are born again or evangelical Christians, according to an entrance poll for The Associated Press and television networks. Another six in 10 said it was very important to share their candidate's religious beliefs. In both categories, none of the former Arkansas governor's opponents came close to that kind of support. With New Hampshire's primaries next Tuesday, the campaign's next stop is a state where only about one in five GOP voters are born again or evangelical Christians - about one-third the number who claimed that status among Iowa Republicans.
January 4, 200818 yr Evangelicals (i think) are denominations like Baptists, Church of God, etc. who are the types of churches that dominate the south. The are "born again" and are portrayed in the media as being very conservative. I don't fit that mold but then again I don't like being called liberal either. Here's a wikipedia page about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelicals#United_States
January 4, 200818 yr Author If an Evangelical votes his/her faith, can they be Democrat? I ask that because as a party the Democrats are pro-choice. That would seem to fly in the face of the Evanglicals.
January 5, 200818 yr If an Evangelical votes his/her faith, can they be Democrat? I ask that because as a party the Democrats are pro-choice. That would seem to fly in the face of the Evanglicals. Fortunately, there are a few logical evangelicals out there. :thumb:
January 5, 200818 yr Author Fortunately, there are a few logical evangelicals out there. :thumb: So you're saying an evangelical can be pro-choice?
January 5, 200818 yr yes. i am both but let's not start a big abortion debate again, nothing gets solved
January 5, 200818 yr Author yes. i am both but let's not start a big abortion debate again, nothing gets solved Hey, no one is more tired of the abortion debate than me. I just didn't know you could be a pro-choice evangelical. I assume you are in the minority.
January 5, 200818 yr Actually I know a lot of people who believe the way I do. Pro-choice doesn't mean you agree with it, it means you believe that you don't have the right to force your beliefs on others. I'm that way.

January 5, 200818 yr When I think of the term I think about conservative Christians. They have a lifestyle based on the morals of the New Testament. Some Christians started the term back in the 50s with the teaching of Billy Graham. I'm one.
January 6, 200818 yr So you're saying an evangelical can be pro-choice? Absolutely. Just like an athiest can be pro-life.
