November 26, 200718 yr New development for UFC 79 Now that Serra is out with injury, Hughes is fighting GSP for the interim welterweight belt. GSP will be taking the fight on a short 4 weeks notice. It stinks that Serra is out. All the build up in the reality show for nothing.
November 27, 200718 yr Author It stinks that Serra is out. All the build up in the reality show for nothing. Who cares? If it's really true that he's going to fight GSP, that's better anyway. I'd much rather see Hughes fight GSP...Serra got lucky, IMO. I think Hughes would have beat him...this way, we get to see the two best in that weight class, instead of having to watch a fight with Matt Serra before we got the real deal. I do find it funny that Serra ran his mouth during the whole TUF show and now he can't "man" up and fight. How about Matt "The Terra-fied" Serra?

November 27, 200718 yr Author He can't "man" up? He suffered an injury that is not possible to fight through...if it was possible don't you think he'd be fighting? It was tongue-in-cheek. However, I do take some satisfaction in the fact that the fight is cancelled because Big Mouth can't make the show. I guess he'll have to be satisfied with a bowling victory over Hughes. He probably injured himself when he was screaming during the TUF fights...his voice is so annoying. Sorry...not a fan of Matt Serra. Maybe he'll win me over someday, but I doubt it.

November 27, 200718 yr Author Regardless of how you feel about Serra he is/was the champion and I was looking forward to that fight. Yeah, I was looking forward to that fight to. But, why? Because Matt Hughes was going to get his belt back and set up the match I really wanted to see, Hughes vs. GSP. Now, I get to see the match I really wanted to see, 3 months earlier. Honestly, I could care less about Serra...the only reason I want to see him fight again is so the winner of Hughes/GSP 3 can be the undisputed Welterweight Champ. So, now that GSP is in, Serra getting hurt only strengthened the fight card, IMO. I guarantee you that the overwhelming majority of knowledgeable MMA fans would rather see GSP in this fight than Serra. It's a more intriguing matchup...kudos to Serra for shocking everyone by KOing St. Pierre, but he'll have to do it again before I'll believe he's really that good. In any case, I'd much rather watch St. Pierre as opposed to Serra...GSP is an exciting fighter.

He also does a VERY funny impression of Matt Hughes vs. Georges St. Pierre.

I see no reason to believe he could not beat Matt Hughes as well. Serra has better stand up than Hughes, and can take care of himself on his back because he's a black belt in BJJ. Do I think Serra is clearly better than Hughes or St.Pierre? No. But he's got the talent to beat either on any given night. BTW, I think the St.Pierre/Hughes III will end just like II if Hughes tries to keep it standing. St.Pierre is too athletic for Hughes and will destroy him again if Hughes tries to box him.

But, forgive me if I don't place Serra on the same level as Hughes and St. Pierre because of one fight. If I based everything on one fight, or even two, then I would have ranked Houston Alexander #1 in the world. Why would you think Serra is clearly better than Hughes? GSP is the only good opponent Serra has ever beat...Hughes is possibly the greatest Welterweight in MMA history. Good for Serra on beating a great fighter...once. Until he does it again, I can't place him on that level. And seriously, if Dana White called you up and said, would you rather watch Hughes vs. St. Pierre, or Hughes vs. Serra, would you pick Hughes vs. Serra?

Hughes might be the greatest of all time, but he's not anything special anymore. Did you see him vs BJ Penn before Penn's injury? How bout against St.Pierre in fight 2? I wasn't impressed. His stand up is VERY weak and Matt Serra has pretty good stand up IMO. Serra isn't that far behind Matt Hughes right now... However, I'd rather have Hughes/Serra at this point because Serra is rightfully the champion. I will NOT view the winner of Hughes/St.Pierre as the champion.

I agree...Hughes hasn't looked as good lately. BJ Penn is an elite fighter...there is no shame in losing to him. Not to mention, he avenged that loss with a TKO. However, Penn, since losing to Pulver in January of '02 has a win over Serra, and his losses have been to Hughes, St. Pierre, and an undefeated 205 fighter (Lyoto Machida). A little bit more impressive than Serra's list of losses. I think St. Pierre is the best Welterweight right now...however, I'd like to see him dismantle Hughes without three kicks to the groin, before I'm completely convinced. But, I'd still rate them both above Matt Serra. You may as well view the winner of the fight as the champion, because they'll have the belt as soon as Serra is able to fight.

I don't believe all of those kicks hit Matt Hughes in the groin. Oh, and I guess you also thought Georges would destroy Serra the first time? I did too, but this is MMA and no favorite is a guarantee to win.

I did too, but this is MMA and no favorite is a guarantee to win. No, but the fact that you bring up the "anyone can win on any given day" argument pretty clearly states who the better fighter is. I thought... Cro Cop would beat Gonzaga Liddell would beat Rampage GSP would beat Serra Jardine would beat Alexander Liddell would beat Jardine Shogun would beat Griffin Cro Cop would beat Kongo Now, out of those fighters...I would still rank Shogun above Griffin, Liddell above Jardine, GSP above Serra.... I just have to see it more than once. That's all. If Serra can beat the winner of this fight, especially if it's GSP again, then I wouldn't question him. Until he proves it wasn't a fluke, I'm not sold on him. I think St. Pierre will beat Hughes. IMO, St. Pierre should be the Welterweight equivalent of what Anderson Silva is in the Middleweight Division. Unstoppable. In any case, I'm happy. I'd rather see Hughes/GSP and that's what I'm getting...after watching Chuck and Wanderlei (finally). Who knows if all of them hit him in the groin? I'm certain at least one of them did, and if the other two didn't, they were darn close...suppose you're in a fight and you get drilled there and then have two others that just miss. Think it might play in your mind a little bit? I think St. Pierre should be the man in that division and he should beat Hughes...but I'd like to see him do it with no possible excuses. I'm just sayin'...
November 28, 200718 yr The Silva and Liddell fight is a little too late. Both guys have been losing lately and this would've definitely been a better fight 2 years ago.
