2007 Best Coaching job in Western, Ky

Featured Replies

Who's done the best coaching in Western, KY this late into the season.

I like the job Scott Shelton has done at Marshall Co. Had to replace last years entire offensive staff and has Marshall Co. at 6-2. Offensively they've got Williams but from what I've seen/heard they've done a good job of also getting the ball to Walker and #9.

Kevin Wallace (Bowling Green) has been impressive with his Offensive playcalling this year. In years past you could get them into being predictable. But this year they've done a good job and utilizing all their athletes. QB (Steelman) isn't the headline winner on that team but he's what makes them go.

Josh McKeel (Calloway) I've always likes Josh. He may or may not turn out to be a great Coach. But he's the type of individual you would want your son to play for. He's blessed with arguably the best sophomore in Western, Ky (Tyrell Willis) and Calloway has the athletes this year and have done a good job staying ballanced in their offensive attack.

Jack Haskins is one of the best if not the best Coach in West Ky and this year has Lone Oak undefeated. But their schedule hasn't been extremely difficult. David Barnes (Caldwell Co.) and Joe Prince (Owensboro) also deserve to be in on the conversation.

Bowling Green seems like it would be a great job with the athletes they get there! Do they get pretty good support?

Wayne Lohaus from Fulton City should get a nod. Never an easy place to coach, especially after the eligibility fiasco from last year that forced them to miss the playoffs.

I also agree with David Barnes from Caldwell County. They have turned their season around quick.

I personally think Jack Haskins is the best coach in Western Ky. I think David Barnes at Caldwell County has done an outstanding job of turning around a team that was beaten soundly by Hopkins Central & Lone Oak to reel off 6 straight wins & a #1 seed in Class 2A Dist #1.

I WOULD put Jack Haskins in this mix......BUT, it doesn't take much to win ballgames when you schedule pushovers.......If Mayfield, Paducah Tilghman, Marshall, Graves, Trigg Co, etc. scheduled like this, all of these teams would be undefeated every year in the regular season. Calloway's Coach would get the nod from me because he turned his team around against a much tougher schedule, AND beat a high caliber team like Mayfield. LO doesn't have a single signature win like this.........

No disrespect to Mayfield (i have said they have the best program in Western Ky year in & year out) but I wouldn't necessarily call them a high caliber team this year since they have lost twice at home this year to Fulton City & Calloway County. I think both Mayfield & Trigg Co peaked a little early this year. Power 87 just how bad do you think Lone Oak would beat Trigg County this year ??? Maybe ask Coach Barnes at Caldwell County since Lone Oak crushed them at Caldwell Co & Caldwell Co thumped Trigg County. I think Lone Oak could beat any of those teams you mention this year.

You are also talking about a team (Caldwell) who started out the year horribly. I think they have progressed more than any team in the region in the last 5 or 6 game span. IMO, a football fan with knowledge of WKY teams can tell you that if LO and Caldwell played again, LO would not beat Caldwell 56-3........I have a feeling it would be a much closer game than that.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, Trigg Co started out hotter than any other team, and now they are inconsistent and beat up. Caldwell beat them the way they did b/c they were already beat up from previous weeks. AND that is the worst Trigg has played all year.........

So what Im saying is you picked out the most extreme scenario to based your opinion on........and I don't understand how you can possibly defend LO's strength of schedule??? It is horrible and you know it. LO's schedule looks like a small 1A team's schedule.....and I think you will find later on in the season that it DOES matter how tough your regular season schedule is...preparation is key.

Also, you may very well be right. LO might beat any one of those teams mentioned above.....but how do we find that stuff out if it never happens......and you are trying to pump LO up as one the best when THEY NEVER PLAY THE BEST.

For my money, Jack Haskins is the best coach in western Kentucky. His track record speaks for itself.

Calloway's Coach would get the nod from me because he turned his team around against a much tougher schedule, AND beat a high caliber team like Mayfield. LO doesn't have a single signature win like this.........
Lone Oak did go on the road and beat the Calloway team that squashed Mayfield ... heck, that should count for something.

I don't know if you read that many of my posts, but Im not exactly calling Mayfield world-beaters here lately.....And yes LO did beat Calloway in OT...and Calloway did crush Mayfield.....so we could say LO and Calloway are pretty much even, considering they (CC) were up 21 points on LO and gave the game away....but I think we all know that Mayfield played its worst game of the season against Calloway.....so that opinion doesn't exactly hold as much water for me as it does for you..........but I know where you are coming from.......

Also, Fulton City is having a great year and beat mayfield too.....but Im not exactly putting them on my watch list as a program that will be winning state championship games in the next five years........I guess the point I am trying to make is that LO hasn't beat a team this year that is successful year in and year out....I don't care if they beat a team that did (Calloway), THEY didn't do it.......

I'll go with the man from Fulton City he only has around 70 guys in the school and has done a tremendous job.

There are not many teams in Western Ky that are sucessful year in & year out period. Only two come to my mind, Mayfield & Paducah Tilghman but what have they won lately??. Trigg has had some sucess in recent years but during the 90's Lone Oak had a better winning percentage than Trigg Co & football didn't exist at Lone Oak. Bottom line, there aren't many sucessful programs in Western Ky. Coach Haskins is trying to build one at Lone Oak & it looks like he is heading in the right direction.

In your previous post, you called Mayfield "a high caliber team" ... which side of the fence are you on now?

so we could say LO and Calloway are pretty much even, considering they (CC) were up 21 points on LO and gave the game away....
Or maybe Lone Oak's the better team and simply overcame a horrible start.

but I think we all know that Mayfield played its worst game of the season against Calloway
The Lone Oak people will tell you the same thing about their game with Calloway ... which really means very little. Lone Oak played poorly for a half and managed to beat Calloway. Mayfield got hammered by the Lakers. Facts are facts.

#1. I will list the schools that, year in and year out, are successful:

-Mayfield.....thats all I need to say.

-Paducah.....is 4th behind Mayfield in state's all-time wins column.

-Marshall......fields a tough, competitive, hard-nosed team every year.

-Graves.......has fielded extremely competitive teams since '99.....(i know because I was a junior @ mayfield that year) and their record since then will show that...I think they have even won a couple of playoff games in that stretch too, including last year against Christian Co.

-Trigg....yes I know they stunk up the 90's....Mayfield played them in the '98 1A 1st round playoffs and killed them on their way to the state championship game, where we were pummelled by Middlesboro (I had 10 tackles in that game!! as a sophomore)...here is the last 9 years of Triggs success:

'99- (3-7) no playoffs

'00- (10-2) lost to Murray 2nd round

'01- (10-3) lost to Glasgow 3rd round

'02- (8-3) lost to Monroe Co 1st round

'03- (9-3) lost to Owensboro Cath 2nd round

'04- (10-2) lost to Owensboro CAth 2nd round

'05- (9-3) lost to Owensboro Cath 2nd round

'06- (10-3) lost to Owensboro Cath 3rd round

'07- (6-2)......to be continued.

75-28....not too bad over almost the past decade.....

#2. What have they won lately?? I think Mayfield wins their district almost every year, and goes to the final four quite often from what I hear and see....and you can't blame Paducah for not winning any districts or playoff games when they were playing Hoptown and Bowling Green in the regular season and playoffs!!!

#3 Lone Oak having a better winning percentage in the 90's than Trigg isn't saying anything. I think I already made that clear above.

#4. Coach Haskins is doing a great job...I don't dislike LO in any form or fashion, although you might be getting that impression. Its just that Im not going to toot LO's horn for playing and beating the teams they have beat...it just doesn't impress me, BUT YES, he is doing a good job. It is always nice to see a dormant program wake up and compete.....your just not being very objective when dicussing your team....obviously you cheer for them, as I do for Mayfield, but be realistic. A LO fan already posted something about Bell Co. and they hoped Bell Co would play LO in the championship game....LO is in for a rude awakening come playoff time, cause they are gonna end up playing a team somewhere along the line that is balanced and can score points and stop LO....then what are they gonna do??

In your previous post, you called Mayfield "a high caliber team" ... which side of the fence are you on now?

Well, i should have said "program" instead of team, because every year is a little different...but is it not the truth??
