By a vote of 165-65, with 159 votes needed for it to pass, the delagate assembly today passed the later startup propositions as they apply to the football and basketball seasons.

 

The starting date for the first BOYS scheduled basketball game will be (By passing Proposition 6 by a vote of 165 to 65) the Monday following the State Football Semifinals.

 

Proposition 6 (Changes start date of Basketball in 2009-10) PASSED 165-65.

Proposition 7 (Changes start for football practice in Pads to August 1) PASSED 163-60

Proposition 8 (Sets summer time frames for basketball and football team competitions) PASSED 159-69-1.

 

The other controversial proposals had to do with summer practices and competition. They both passed by a narrow margin. Proposition 8 basically will restrict game competition for certain sports during June and July.

 

In a nutshell if basketball teams are going to play school vs school competitions it must be between June 1 and June 24th. Football (7 on 7 passing leagues etc) must be between July 10 and July 31. The key words here are school vs school competitions. This does not effect open gyms etc..

 

I abstracted the above information from a correspondance that I received from our Athletic Director, Mel Webster. He did not define exactly when the start of the football season will start and did not say exactly when the State Football Semi-finals will be held in the future.

 

I'm also curious how the "school-to-school" summer competition proposition, limiting such competitions to June 1 to June 24th (the startup of the dead-period) will effect things such as team camps conducted later in the summer.

 

As always the proposals must be approved by the State Board of Education before being enacted.

Basketball should then start about the same time as now , if I am thinking right.

What was failed to mention in this debate is when the college recruiting window is for basketball. If i am not mistaken the window to watch high school athletes is in July therefore all players will be playing AAU in July. That is good for skill development! Yeah right.

I don't have a link, because the information came from our Athletic Director who attended the meetings and made notes as to the issues and the vote outcome.

IMHO its not in the media because those in charge know this is a basketball state first and foremost and they trying to change that.

 

 

In reality this doesn't change much, as most team camps are between June 1st and the 24th anyways, like G-town, Pikeville College, Transy, Eastern, Western, etc.

Although it doesn't change much, at least it sets some specific guidelines, which will ultimately help the small schools who have dual sport athletes. It's seems to always be a "challenge" for small schools competing for athletes in the summer. Basically, now it can be said that June is basketball month, and July is Football month.
