Scribe's Week Seven High School Football Notebook

It’s been a hectic week, and the upcoming slate of games offers some very intriguing non-district games that could play a part in determining tie-breaker points for district seeding in a few weeks.

 

First up this week, we take a look at some record-breaking coaches.

 

· Russell head coach Ivan McGlone picked up his 300th career win last week as the Red Devils easily beat Lewis County 65-20. McGlone has won 272 games at Russell and 28 at Vinson High School in West Virginia.

 

· Bell County head coach Dudley Hilton won his 299th career game as the Bobcats easily dispatched of Madison Southern 51-7. Freshman Dominique Carton rushed eight times for 137 yards and two touchdowns, as Hilton is just one win away from becoming the second Kentucky coach to win 300 games in the Bluegrass State. Bell County (6-0) travels to Sheldon Clark (7-0) Friday.

 

· Belfry head coach Phillip Haywood is just two wins away from 300 after the Pirates hammered Magoffin County 41-14 last Thursday. Haywood goes for No. 299 this week at Pike County Central.

 

On to the players and teams:

 

· Johnson Central beat Paintsville 49-15 in the 34th annual Apple Bowl. The win marked the first time in the 33-year history of the bowl the Golden Eagles have won four straight games over the Tigers. Shawn Grimm ran 17 times for 173 yards in just three quarters of play for Johnson Central.

 

· Corbin beat Middlesboro 48-15 for their 29th consecutive win against district opponents. Clint Cashen was 7-of-15 for 155 yards, and sophomore Ryan Fritts ran for 88 yards.

 

· Dustin Sydnor rushed for 110 yards on seven carries and reached the end zone twice as Russellville hammered Hart County 46-14. Two other Panthers topped 80 yards on the ground – Damian Elam had 85 yards and three scores, and quarterback Mikie Benton added 84 yards and two touchdowns.

 

· West Carter had an ace in the hole in their 38-12 win over county rival East Carter. Maybe more like an Ace in the pocket. Junior Ace Puckett threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead his team to their second win of the season.

 

· Heath’s Chad Wright has been hampered by a separated shoulder that has given him some problems this year. Don’t tell that to Trigg County. Wright rushed for 247 yards on 29 carries and scored twice in Heath’s 35-21 loss at Trigg County. The senior running back was the first running back to run for more than 230 yards against the Wildcats in Cadiz since Fulton County’s Byron Tucker in a 1996 playoff game. Scotty Mayes (11 carries, 197 yards) and Brandon Bridges (15 carries, 145 yards) paced the 344-yard rushing night for Trigg.

 

· Pineville’s T.J. Lord rushed for 218 yards on just 12 carries and scored three times as the Mountain Lions beat Jenkins 28-21.

 

· Atherton beat Breckinridge County 20-6 to secure the school’s first-ever trip to the playoffs. Justin Cloud threw for a touchdown, ran for a score, and took a punt return 69 yards to the house as the Rebels picked up their third win of the season – the most since 1993. Atherton has won two-in-a-row in the same season for the first time in 11 years.

 

· Bath County’s Blandon Clemons ran the football only four times but racked up 166 yards and scored on all four carries as the Wildcats blitzed Morgan County 62-8. Clemons also returned a pick 38 yards for a score, giving him five touchdowns on five touches.

 

· Bowling Green’s quarterback/receiver tandem of Trent Steelman and D.L. Moore continue to rewrite the Purples’ record book. And Michael “Bulldog” Drake couldn’t be happier. Steelman became the first BG quarterback to top 4,000 passing yards in his career, while Moore set a record with his eighth touchdown reception of the season.

 

· Boone County running back Cory Farris ran for 200 yards on 16 carries as the Rebels hammered Simon Kenton 41-3. Farris (4,655 yards) is now third on the all-time Boone County rushing list behind Shaun Alexander (6,670 yards) and Preston Herron (5,014 yards).

 

· Aaron Wilson ran for 203 yards, and teammate Dae’Ron Williams added 165 yards and four touchdowns to lead Fulton City past Murray 48-20. Jamie King rushed for 190 yards and a score for Murray.

 

· Dayton’s defense forced six turnovers, and the Greendevil offense converted four of them into scores in their 35-8 conquest of Bellevue in the 123rd meeting between the schools.

 

· Crittenden County quarterback J.D. Gray rushed for 192 yards on 16 carries and scored five times to help the Rockets beat Ballard Memorial 49-23. Rodney Robertson added 16 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns for the Rockets.

 

· Sean Thompson completed 14-of-20 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns to help Franklin County smack Bourbon County 62-6. Terry Metcalf ran for 139 yards on 11 carries and scored three times, while junior receiver Deron Hicks caught five passes for 154 yards.

 

· Tevon Boards ran for 169 yards and two scores to help Warren Central beat Barren County 41-19.

 

· Green County overcame 257 yards passing from Will Warf to beat Metcalfe County 32-24 in a battle of Class 2A unbeatens. The Dragons have won seven straight games for the first time in seven years.

 

· Cumberland rolled up 480 rushing yards in a 41-14 win over Harlan in the final meeting between the two schools. Sophomore Shequille Clark ran for 170 yards on just seven carries and scored twice. Junior Lance Simmons added 160 yards, and fellow junior Nathaniel Gilliam ran for 125 yards and combined for three scores. Cumberland, which is consolidating with Evarts and Cawood into Harlan County High School next year, wins the all-time series with Harlan 31-30-1.

 

· Frankfort’s Quan Weaver ran for 195 yards on 14 carries in their 33-14 district win over Trimble County.

 

· Holmes pulled off a northern Kentucky shocker with a 33-20 win over Dixie Heights. James Miller completed 8-of-14 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 155 yards on 25 carries for the winners.

 

· Devin Foster ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns, caught a 61-yard scoring pass, and threw a 40-yard pass to lead Union County past Webster County 54-33. Webster returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in the loss.

 

· Mercer County missed a potential game-tying 33-yard field goal as time expired in their 17-14 loss to Hopkinsville. Mercer County (3-4) has lost four games by a total of 12 points, with three of the losses coming on the road.

 

· Tyler Olinger completed 6-of-10 passes for 273 yards, and Joey Meehan had two touchdown grabs for 112 yards as Hazard rolled past Evarts 56-27. Wildcat quarterback Derek Cochran threw for 194 yards in the loss.

 

· Breathitt County’s Colby Fugate completed 11-of-16 passes for 213 yards in the first half to lead the Bobcats past Fleming County 59-6. Younger brother Channing Fugate ran for 129 yards on 14 carries.

 

· Adam Schmitz ran for 200 yards and score to lift Ryle past Conner 38-9.

 

· Clay Clevenger picked up his first coaching win at Henderson County and saw the Colonels climb back into the playoff picture with their first win of the season, 35-24 over Graves County. Almondo Theus ran for a school-record 279 yards, breaking the old mark of 273 held by Daymon Carter in 1991.

 

· Junior Rob Kues threw for three scores and ran for a fourth as Newport Central Catholic blanked Newport 40-0. Kues finished with 227 yards passing and 66 yards rushing.

 

· Bryan Hines threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns to help Fern Creek beat Bullitt Central 46-10 and move to 6-0 for the first time since 1995.

 

· With three games left in the regular season, Anderson County has won seven games for the first time in a decade as the Bearcats beat South Oldham 28-19 behind 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Ben Walker.

 

· Justin Green ran 13 times for 148 yards and scored three touchdowns as Male cruised past Southern 55-6.

 

· Tony Knox ran for 114 yards and three scores, including the game-winner as Bullitt East knocked off county rival North Bullitt 42-35.

 

· North Oldham beat Spencer County 35-24 behind 123 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Andrew Tuller.

 

· Sophomore Zach Stegemoller completed 13-of-21 passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns to lead Ludlow past Bishop Brossart 46-8. Josh Mantooth added124 yards rushing, and Tyler Trammel caught four touchdown passes for the Panthers.

 

· It was a tale of two halves as Danville held off Bardstown 20-14 to clinch home field advantage in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Antwoine Simon rushed for 152 yards to lead the Admirals, who led 20-0 but rushed for just 16 yards in the second half.

 

· Scott Brown caught three passes for 143 yards, ran five times for 70 yards, and scored twice to lead Gallatin County to their fourth straight win, 37-7 over Bracken County.

 

· Brandon Gordon scored with 37 seconds left as Moore shocked Elizabethtown 48-44. Gordon finished with 319 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Teammate Alonzo Battle added 148 yards on 13 carries. E-town quarterback J.D. Tanner threw for 340 yards and four touchdowns in the loss.

 

· Pikeville totaled 400 rushing yards in their easy 54-12 win at South Floyd. Daniel Harmon ran for 175 yards and four scores on just nine carries. Ted Honaker carried just twice and totaled 73 yards and a touchdown.

 

· Berea has two wins for the first time in six years as the Pirates beat Clinton County 30-28 in overtime. After a Berea score in the OT, Rashad Slaughter scored the conversion for the 30-22 lead. Clinton County scored a touchdown on their possession but fumbled away the conversion. Slaughter finished with 200 yards rushing on 33 carries.

 

· Pulaski County continues to “A-Muse” on offense thanks to sophomore quarterback Chris Muse, who ran for 254 yards and threw for 219 more yards in the Maroons’ 41-15 win over cross-town rival Southwestern. Muse accounted for five touchdowns as Pulaski County beat both Somerset and Southwestern to win the city championship for just the second time in school history.

 

· Matt Denham ran for 109 yards in less than a half of action as John Hardin remained unbeaten with a 63-0 win over Iroquois. It was the Bulldogs’ first shutout win since 2002.

 

· Doss quarterback Demetric Unseld was 12-of-17 passing for 289 and ran for 112 yards to lead the Dragons past Waggener 54-20.

 

· Will Stein completed 13-of-19 for 255 yards, and Tim Phillips added 104 yards rushing and two scores to help Trinity beat Ballard 48-23. T.J. Pryor threw for 313 yards in the loss.

 

· Somerset receiver John Cole scored three touchdowns to tie the all-time state touchdown record in the Briar Jumpers’ 63-0 win over Jackson County. Cole had 153 yards receiving and three scores to tie Montrell Jones’ career TD mark of 59 receiving touchdowns as Somerset picked up the program’s 600th career victory. Chase Hall was 6-of-7 passing for 293 yards and five touchdowns for the Briar Jumpers.

 

· Jordan Mills threw five touchdowns passes, three to Rodrick Ballard, as Fairdale beat Jeffersontown 30-13.

 

· Logan Bunch completed 20-of-26 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown as Lafayette beat Tates Creek 24-7. Tommy Gifford has seven catches for 110 yards and returned to second half kickoff 87 yards for a score.

 

· Gerwin Brewer scored two of Valley’s three touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Vikings rallied for a 26-20 win over Western. The Warriors saw their state-best 11-game road winning streak end with the loss.

 

· Dontey Gay rushed for 106 yards, and Ryan Phillipi threw for 110 yards, ran for 88, and accounted for four touchdowns in Henry Clay’s 55-6 win over Paul Dunbar.

 

· Leslie County beat Knott County Central 47-6 behind the arm of Jimmy Joe Morgan (200 passing yards and three TDs) and the legs of Dustin Miller (262 rushing yards).

 

· In a basketball score, Perry County Central outscored Clay County 68-57. Ryan Miller ran 29 times for 227 yards and six touchdowns plus a pair of 2-point conversions for 40 points. Quarterback Jordan Amis carried 16 times for 153 yards and completed 6-of-9 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns, including a 99-yard TD pass to Eric Back. The 99-yard pass is ninth, according to the KHSAA, and first since Bardstown’s Kelvin Scott last year.

 

· Casey Hayes ran 15 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns as Rockcastle County escaped their offensive doldrums with a 51-0 win over McCreary Central.

 

· Campbellsville’s Shumari Bridgewater rushed for 213 yards and four touchdowns, kicked four extra points, and threw a touchdown in the Eagles’ 68-36 win over Williamsburg, who got 259 yards passing from Ryan Moses in the loss.

 

 

Five games to keep an eye on this week:

 

· Danville at Russellville (Thursday) – These schools have combined to win 13 state titles and both come into Thursday’s game at historic Rhea Stadium with identical 6-1 records. There will be no shortage of speed on the field in this one.

 

· Cumberland vs. Hazard – Home field advantage and the district’s top seed is on the line when these high-powered offenses square off Friday. Cumberland averages 343 rushing yards a game, while Hazard tops 500 yards offensively each night (503).

 

· Central at Johnson Central – The Yellow jackets don’t venture out of Louisville much and haven’t played a school east of Richmond in the regular season since a 14-6 loss to Boyd County in 1977. Johnson Central had trouble with Woodford County’s athletes in a 43-22 loss Sept. 21. Should be another interesting game to track.

 

· Highlands vs. Lexington Catholic – These teams won two of the last three Class 3A state titles before realignment this year. The Knights (6-1) appear to be getting healthy at the right time as the face a Highlands team that has started the season 7-0. These teams are ranked No. 1 by Bluegrasspreps.com in their respective class this week.

 

· Bell County at Sheldon Clark – Any other time, the fact these teams are both unbeaten in October and playing Friday would be the top headline. However this week, it takes a back seat to Dudley Hilton who is looking to join Newport Central Catholic’s Bob Schneider in the 300-win club.

Streak of the Week

 

· Until last week’s 26-20 loss at Valley, Western had not lost a true road game since a 2004 loss at Garrard County – a span of 11 games. The longest road game-winning streak is now eight games, shared by Henry Clay, Male, and Lexington Catholic.
