Paris (0-7) vs Owen County (1-6) ... Who wins?

How many of you guys remember back in the early 80's when this use to be a showdown of two top 5 teams in Class A? It seems that both programs have taken a big hit over the past few years and it's going to take some time before they get back to those glory days. This year's Paris team isn't really as bad as their record indicates. Give them a few more bodies and they could easily be 6-1 or 5-2 at this point and time. However, I do know that you must take the good with the bad. Looking at Paris' schedule this year and their results and then when I look at Owen County's schedule and results, I really don't think this game will be close. Paris' speed and athleticism will win out in a big way. Paris has a long way to get back to the top of their class but Owen County's travel is a lot longer and with that said, I really believe Paris will put an end to their longest losing streak in school history at 9 in a row.

These two teams met in the Class A playoffs once, in 1980, with Owen County winning 20-0. That remains the only playoff victory in Owen County football history.

Great post Option Right. I agree. I believe if Paris had more depth, you could flip their record. Paris has always had athletes, and speed. I love the heart that we see from this group of guys. Paris has been plagued with injuries with their key players, but even with that, you have that group that is out there giving it all they got!

I think Paris will win the last three games.

Who ever scores will win.

I played in the 80Region game. Paris did not lose for 2 years after the game.

Where did you find this information at? I know in 80 they went to the semis.

Back then the football setup was different. You only had to win two games to reach the state finals. And remember, they only took the district winner to the playoffs instead of four teams like they do today. Owen County beat us (Paris) at that time in the region finals and then they lost to Russellville in the state semi finals.

Flashback to 1980 ....

No.3 Owen County to play No.4 Paris in the Region finals

I was a starting halfback and played defensive back on that Paris team and yes, Curt Cochran was a load. You guys got us at the right time because we lost our starting quarterback the week before and he didn't play in the playoff game when we came to Owenton. And we gave you guys a lot of respect because you guys could flat out hit. Remember, you guys came to our place to open the season that year. However, without our quarterback, we couldn't run our bread and butter offense ... called the ... option!

I know ... we did go on a pretty good roll. We went through three consecutive regular seasons without losing a game and ended up winning at that time a state record 38 in a row along with back-to-back state championships.

Years of accumulation! In the 1970s and 1980s there were only 8 teams that made the playoffs so one win put you in the state semifinals. That's what happened in 1980.

Owen County failed in the opening round the two years before, losing both seasons to Madison High. The Rebels wouldn't return to the postseason until 1991 when the format was expanded to four teams per district. That season they lost to Bardstown and then lost the next season to Washington County.

The last two appearances for Owen County was 1997 in another loss to Bardstown and then as a Class AA member in 2001, losing to Fleming County. The good news is, in a four-team district, Owen will return to postseason play this year.

I was thinking there was a game before that, but you are right, I hate getting old, cant remember anything. I was the QB the night you guys broke the state record in Owenton for most wins in a row. Got nice broken collar bone out of that deal.

And Paris ran it well !

Also, IMO- I personally believe Robert Maggard is the best qb to ever hit the field at Paris High School.

So Paris is out of the playoffs?

I think they had 22 that night to break the record, but I believe that has been broken.
