I'll bet our good friend, marooncat, was much more anxious to list Rose Hill as #16 than he was to list his girls at #3. I wonder why he listed Bath County twice and left Russell out.

Personally, I will put the missing Russell at #1 with East Carter #2 and Ashland #3. I think that Rose Hill, even with their middle school makeup, will finish ahead of three teams on the list- at least one of which is in its district.

One fact is undisputable. The region is very weak in team talent and individual talent. Of course, someone must win.

I left Russell off By mistake The Lady Devils are #9 on my list. Kingfish if I knew who you supported I would put them last in any sport even checkers. My question is why do you think the region is team weak or player weak just because your team is down this year.

Your conclusion as to the basis of my opinion is, as usual, incorrect. Even the most rabid 16th Region fan would have to admit that there is no team in the region who could remotely have reached the final four at Morehead last year. The region had five D-1 scholarship recipients last year. There were several more seniors who received lesser scholarships.

The truth is that there are no truly outstanding players left. Vanderhoof at Raceland is probably the best. Teamwise? Let's just say that, unlike the last two years, most all the other regions would be pleased to draw the sixteenth in the state tournament. Russell ninth? Wishful thinking on your part. Where am I wrong?

Very good analysis. I would believe Russell should be the favorite. Raceland may be a little higher and Rose Hill a little lower. But, overall, a very good analysis.

I agree, but with what the other teams lost and with what Simpson should do, again if Vanderhoof is not healthy Imo I think that will be enough, but like I rated them Ashland is probably the scariest team around even though I rank them 4th it had nothing to do with the girls

Ashland played Russell in the semi-final game last year.

True but I don't think anyone considered them the fourth best team in the region by a long shot and they were never a threat to win the region. Nonetheless they did upset someone in the first round to get there proving that anything can happen.

They should be a top four team this coming season. Having the district tournament at Ashland will help them a lot.

Bill Bradley deserves a good season but Merle Kidwell deserves a trip to Bowling Green (as a participant rather than as a spectator).

With Kidwell as coach, Russell will always be in the mix, but I don't think that they are top 3. Russell has no true point guard and if Sparks is used at that position it will take away from her outside scoring, scoring that Russell will definitely need this year. Also Russell has no true inside threat, especially now that the freshman Okoro is no longer at Russell. If she had stayed, Russell would have been solid by the end of the year. Simpson will be good, but can she handle the added attention now that Fortman is gone? Only time will tell on this.

If what I hear is correct, center Keeton at Raceland is also hurt and my not be back until December (someone let me know if this is incorrect info). With no standout guards, and Vanderhoof questionable, Raceland may have a tough season - but Trimble is a good coach and may be a factor by the end of the seaon, IF Vanderhoof and Keeton come back 100%.

Rosehill will struggle mightily this season, and regardless of past achievements (which are definitely impressive), they will finish (IMO) in the last 3 of the Region.

Okoro is only an eighth grader.

She will be missed now and down the road.

The 16th region should be in for some great basketball. There are lots of good solid players and many younger players coming up. Things should be wide open and very competitive and who knows who will rise to the top.

Alphabetical order:

Tier1: Any of these could turn out to be the top team.

Ashland

East Carter

Raceland

Rowan Co.

Russell

West Carter

Tier 2: A couple of these could move to tier 1

Elliott Co

Fleming Co

Lewis Co

Menifee Co

Morgan Co

Tier 3

Bath Co

Boyd Co

Fairview

Greenup Co

Rose Hill
