Here's the thing. I believe that Ty was let go too soon. He did not get a fair chance. However, Ty was boring, everything about him, and he was not winning. He was losing his fan base with his stone face and 18 ppg offense. Now, Weiss shaped Quinn into one of the best QBs in ND history. Weiss is a great offensive mind, I mean he did win 3 Super Bowls as an O-Coordinator. I have more faith in Weiss than I did Ty. So, in closing, I feel that Ty got let go too quickly, but race had nothing to do with it. It was the direction that the program was going in. After two 10 win seasons, Weiss will only be in trouble if they go 9-3 or worse next year.

 

I'll only disagree that race played NO factor. I don't think it played a factor with the admininstration of ND but I have zero doubt it was a factor with some boosters.

I'll give you that, but it's SOME Boosters. One of my good friends was 3rd generation ND graduate. He hated Davie as much as he hated Ty and it was all about performance. I watched quite a few games at his Dad's house, with his Dad's roommate. They are vociferous, but never was the questioning about Ty's race. It was about his ability to coach. They may be in the minority, but I'll be that they're not. ND's fan base has this belief that Top 5 is a birth right. If you are going south in the wins column, you're gonna catch heat. I'll stick with my prediction. If Weiss doesn't have a 9-3, at minimum, year next year, he's going to be on the hot seat, if not gone. Fair or not, head coach at ND is the 2nd highest position in the Catholic religion in the US. There's a lot of heat that goes along with that.

Willingham and Davie were both axed because they weren't even close to producing the way Notre Dame is expected to produce! End of story! I get sick of the race card thing! They hired him didn't they? Bottom line they both stunk it up and they both deserved to be shown the door. Weis has a much better resume and I think he will get the recruites. People bashed a lot of UK fans when Tubby was let go but they aren't crying now that UK is getting top recruits again. I think Notre Dame has problems beyond coaching (getting into the school, schedule etc). I still have confiedence in Weiss (somehting I didn't have in Willingham or Davie) but I really think he brings a pretty complex system in that needs a certain type of talent. I'll be suprised if the Irish aren't really good in a couple of years when he gets his pieces in the system. This is a good chance to start molding a young QB for the future IMO.

While I'm not big on the Big 10 those are some tough road games. UCLA is on the rise and USC is as good as it gets. Those games compared to somebody like UofL's schedule is daylight and dark IMO.

I think the academics make it tougher to recruit there too. Also the tradition is unsurpassed but if you are a high school kid it might be a little different. You can go to Notre Dame where there is nothing but the school and bad weather or you can go to Florida,USC etc where the weather is great and so are the surroundings.

All you have to do to avoid that type of schedule is join a conference. It's there choice, so it can't be used as an excuse.

I totally agree with you. It's not an excuse for me, I just said it made things tough. It's all about the $$$ on that one.

There is only one SEC I've always been the first to say that. The Big12 is tough. I don't think you can look at that schedule and say it's a gravy one though. Like I said I think the Big10 is down but those are tough road games along with playing at UCLA, USC+GT at home. That is a very solid schedule IMO!

If they were in the Big 10 then it would be a tough Big10 schedule but then to go out and play at UCLA, pick up GT and USC desreves some respect.

Why? Compared to other top 10 teams.

I'll give you Duke, but why?

They beat Ga Tech, who wound up going to the ACC Championship game and later losing to WVU by 3 in the Gator Bowl. Next, they beat then #17 PSU, way overrated granted, but still #17. Third, they were smoked by Michigan, who had a good year last year, making the BCS and all. Fourth they came behind to beat MSU, a solid opponent and on the road. Fifth, they beat a bad Purdue team, however this schedule is looking harder than the one that Wisconsin played last year. Sixth, ND beats a horrible Stanford team by 11. Point to you. Seventh, ND beats UCLA in the closing moments. UCLA beat USC last year. Eighth, ND beats Navy, who went to a bowl game and gave Boston College all that they could handle. Ninth, Ok, Air Force is Air Force. Tenth, Army is Army. Eleventh, Dwayne Jarret makes Booty look great and the Trojans thump ND. Twelfth, Russell makes himself the #1 pick.

 

I believe this to be objective. ND didn't play Duke, so I was wrong. However, this schedule stacks up to any Big 10 team and almost any other team in the country. Point being, the schedule did not exactly suck.

This year at first blush is slightly better than last year.

 

We ND fans can no longer use the schedule as a reason for them not being successful.
