Right, I agree that a kid shouldn't make that hit, but all the same, kids are taught to "hit to the whistle" and it was a clean hit...I just think that is a rule in football that needs to be looked at.

It's a safety issue nothing more, nothing less. There was no need to hit a player 10 yards behind the ball carrier. I imagine that particular "hit" had no impact on the play.

It is a penalty that is only a few years old that simply takes away another opportunity for contact on the field. If a hit is clean between the whistles, it should be allowed. However, it was a penalty. It was a penalty that I think is one more thing that is making the game softer, but it was a penalty.

Players that trail a play, typically ease up and become spectators. More often than not, they usually walk, jog or stand still in the middle of the field and watch the play unfold before them. Whenever that happens those players become easy targets since they don't expect to get hit by an opposing player. They are defenseless players. Officials are not only charged with the duty of administering the rules in order to make sure that contest is fair and balanced, but we also have the ultimate responsibility for player safety. Each play is different. Slight contact that does not knock a player down might not warrant a penalty, but rather some preventative officiating. Therefore, if they would still be able to legally earhold, it would reinforce the coaching aspect of never becoming a spectator on the football field. If a clean hit is dangerous, we wouldn't be allowed to play the game. No player is defenseless. They are all wearing equipment and they all have the ability to keep their field awareness at a heightened level.

Are you saying that a player that is 20-30 yards behind the play is at fault of being taken out if they are taken out by a hit because their field awareness was not at a heightened level?

YES. That has been part of football since the begining of the sport. It only has changed at the high school level since around 02. Haven't you ever heard the phrase don't get caught standing around on the football field? Also, geting decleated by a clean hit is not being taken out. Being taken out indicates a classless, low level cut or high low in my vocabulary.

Im going to agree with 94 camel on this one, but I was wondering if anyone happened to get a good look at touchdown catch in the second quarter by a Campbell County reciever, from where I was at it looked to be out of the back of the endzone.... Did anyone get a good look at it???

That is way different. Wearing a helmet is mandatory. Loafing after a play passes you by isn't. It remains a legal hit. I don't think a rule shoud change based on the location relative to the ball.

At one time a facemask was a clean hit and then it was made illegal, I am sure that there were some that said it was making the game softer.

 

Wasn't this the rule that came about when the Bengal had his year ended by a hit from a Bronco lineman that was off the ball and behind the play.

I strongly disagree with this point, the facemask rule is legitimate rule, grabbing a facemask could result in a serious injury and is unpreventable by the recepiant.... if you dont wannna get earhold then keep your head on a swivle and pay attention. That is part of the game that makes it football, ask anyone who plays high school football they have to love the contact and intensity. None the less still a penelty and is a dumb play.
