NewCath/Holmes Scrimmage

Recommended Posts

Full regulation game conditions for this scrimmage.

In three quarters Newcath outscored Holmes 42-7.

Before you get too giddy or depressed about the results remember one team has practiced into December the last two years, has a coach that probably exchanged telegrams with Lombardi, and the other coaching staff is new this year.

That said Holmes had no answer for anything NewCath did. NewCath offense scored consistantly by run and pass, and was far ahead at this point. Lots of speed and very deep pool for NewCath on offense. Holmes did manage to stop NCC inside the 10 on two drives or the score could have been worse. Once on downs with some good defense and once when the NCC receiver had the ball but juggled it when trying to turn towards the goal line and the Holmes defender had an INT.

The NewCath defense gave up a couple of long gainers off of QB scrambles and the one score Holmes got was on a pass when the NCC defender went for the INT but the Holmes receiver held on and was off to the races. Other than that Holmes could not move the ball in any sustained manner and the passing game isn't quite there yet. Lots of counters and scrambles out of the shotgun formation and the runners are very quick.

Special teams was all NewCath in every aspect of the game although NewCath never punted.

Kues was the QB for NewCath and probably threw for 200 -225 yards to maybe 8 different receivers. Kelly had most of the carries and was probably around 100 rushing and 150 combined yards.

Kues looks very good... The offense is so far ahead of where they were last year at this time... They need to hold onto the ball though... The defense looked pretty good just need to work on tackling

Who were the standouts for NCC that were "un-expected"? Did Paar play? How was their o & D line?

Parr did not play in the first three quarters of regular game action.

O-line was fine, Kues had time to throw and when they ran the ball it was always positive yardage. Goal line situations they even went to a modified wishbone with a tight end and an o-lineman in the backfield with Kelly. Bob probably had flashbacks to 1966 and playing Elder in the Pit.

D-line was solid but needs to work on containing the QB. Granted Holmes is extremely quick in the backfield but a couple of times the QB scrambled and got outside containment. They had a few sacks and tackles for losses on running plays. Holmes could not really run the ball that effectively and was stopped on a 4 and 1 early and late.

As for "unexpected" no one stands out other than the QB truthfully being way ahead of where Harris was at this time last year. However, throwing on 2nd and 4 against a defense that was showing some signs of being tired by the end of the first quarter could possibly be different than throwing on 3rd and 12 against an experienced team. NCC is absolutely loaded at receiver.

The modified wishbone formation you speak of is actually a power formation with two fullbacks. And the players were not an o-lineman and tight end, they were two fullbacks in John Pabst and Nick Franzen, both of which also play linebacker on defense.

I was extremely impressed with the NCC team. The offense is a machine, that unit looked hungry. Coach has to be smiling.......so much talent. The QB throws the ball very well. The wideouts are a threat with each catch, fast...fast...fast. The RB is one tough kid. He will put the plastic too you. The line is big as always, not as big as in the past.....but quick and aggressive. This unit is going to score plenty of points and fast.

Defense...extremely quick when they catch up to the offense....your going to see this team go on another roll. So many bodies in and out on the defense, keeping the kids fresh.

Good luck Breds your off season program must be impressive.....so many of the youngsters have stepped it up. Coach said these kids have all tasted success over the past few years, looks like they are still hungry.

This could very well be the best team of the last three, that is a scary thought. Hope to see you in the (Ville) in December WOW WOW WOW
