Top 11th Region Teams

Featured Replies

I saw LCA play a few times this summer and they didnt look like they could compete with many teams in the 11th. LCA I hear was in the weaker half of the AAU State Tournament with schools such as Scott County,Elliott County and June Buchanan being on the other half of the bracket.

They were in the weaker half of the bracket, LCA got beat in the finals by 33.

Who didn't Scott Co. beat by 33 (when they had Mackey)?

Well they beat Middlesborro, Wayne County, Cumberland, Montgomery County, and it should be noted they played Scott County in finals when it was their 5th basketball game in less than 24 hours. Also it should be noted that they beat Middlesborro by 36 points, and I don't believe Middlesboro is that weak, just ran into a good team that night. I think it's safe to say that they did earn making it to the finals.

IMO, the top four teams I saw there were Scott Co., June Buchanon, Fern Creek, and Boone. June knocked Fern Creek out (by about 8-11), and Scott Co. knocked June Buchanon out (by 3) and Boone out (by 16) with Mackey. They were all 4 in the same side of the bracket. Except for a bad second quarter, Boone outscored Scott Co. the rest of the game.

If Boone Co outscored Scott Co in every quarter except the 2nd and still lost by 16, Scott Co must have had one heck of a second quarter.

With the exception of powerhouse Scott County it sounds like many of the stronger teams in the 11th as well as the State were not entered in this tournament.

There was several strong teams in LCA's bracket (Cumberland, Tates Creek, Montgomery county, Clay County, Franklin Simpson and Hazard) LCA played well, but I think they have a confidence problem against some of the perennial powers in the 11th. They will play a lot of good basketball and win several games, but until they develop a belief that they can compete with the Scott County's, Bryan Station's and Tates Creek's they will not compete very well with them. I think they are capable of being a top 6 or 7 team in the Region and should win the All A Region and make a good showing in Richmond. They play smart, disciplined basketball and have some talent, I wish them well this upcoming year.

Tates Creek was missing a few key players during this tournament. Also anyone who has ever seen Desmond Johnson from Cumberland play know he is extremely talented, if he were 6'9 instead of 6'5 he would be a major D-1 PF.

Tates Creek was actually only missing one player, but it was their best player (Sparks) Cumberland was without 2 of their top 6 players, one of their 3 year starters (Hogue) severely sprained his ankle the game before the tournament started. Desmond Johnson is a beast and he has some talent around him, watch out for Cumberland

To be honest most teams there were short people, due to vacations, summer baseball, and football camps.

Too many vacations, baseball games, and football camps will stunt your growth.

The double meaning there is very profound, I must agree. Too many kids miss out growing as basketball players, to travel on baseball teams.

Shelvin Mack will shine this year...not that he hasn't already done so. But this year he will be sick.

I agree he will be 1 of the top players in the region. Gosh the list of players from the region is pretty great:

Bud Mackey

Shelvin Mack

Michael Sparks

Victor Moses

Aaron Morris

Nathan Novosal

That is just naming a handful of guys at the top!
