Correct IF the player in standing in front of you or upright. This play was legal. I was curious to see how the umpire called it.

Somone please correct me if I am wrong but I don't think you are allowed to hurdle the catcher on a play at the plate.

 

 

I'm not sure on that, but recently I was at the Ryle vs Cov Cath JV Regional final and a Cov Cath runner hurdled the catcher and was not tagged, landed on home plate, and was called safe...

I believe the wording, states "avoid contact, or attempt to slide, if the catcher has the ball"....I'm not certain, if hurdling is addressed per the NFHS Rule Book, other than like CSHS81 indicated. He is correct but to clarify, if the fielder is on the ground, he can hurdle.

 

Anyone know, the actual section/paragraph wording. I don't have my book with me....if memory serves me, should be around the 8.4's or in that area.

Coach Myerhoff shared the opinion that the runner was not tagged and was safe because he was heading towards the umpire at the end of the inning only to be drug by his shirt sleeve by an assistant coach back to the dugout.

From what I remember of the clip, the catcher was in foul territory on the 3rd base side, and he had to reach to his right and up to tag the leaping runner. It looked as though his mitt never got above his chin, and the runners trailing foot clipped his mask/helmet. I believe the umpire was still behind the plate, so his view of the 'tag' was obstructed by the catcher's body.

There were two plays at the plate in separate innings. The one where he was crouching at the plate the runner slid in and was visibly out. On the play where the runner leapt over the catcher, the tag looked a little more questionable.

Sounds like on this particular play if the tag was not applied the runner is safe. What is your opinions?

My opinion would be that if the catcher is up the line and the runner leaps the catcher to avoid the tag and/or contact with the catcher, then he should be called safe. As long as he is not tagged.

My opinion, and the one the KHSAA umpires that were seated with me gave me, was that the runner jumped over the the catcher to avoid the tag. It was their opinions that the catcher didn't tag him (we weren't near enough to say for sure, but it looked like he didn't) but in jumping/hurdling the catcher try to tag the runner, they and I both felt that he was out....

This rule would make no sense to me just for the simple fact that if the catcher is up the line, a runner is able to run through him, but if he is at the plate then there must be a slide.

So does not allowing hurdling protect the safety of the players? If that was the case, then the runner should not be able to run through a catcher who has the ball away from the plate area and up the line.

 

I personally think that if a catcher is going down to make a tag on a player then the runner should be able to hurdle the catcher to get to the plate. But that is just my personal opinion.
