oldrambler Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 What are everyones favorite brands as far as fishing tackle/ equipment goes? I am a fan and believer in: Garcia reels Berkly/Triline Line Berkley, Fenwick and BPS(Bass Pro) Rods. (there are many good brands of road and reels ou there) Lures vary but imo a peson cannot go wrong with: Berkley Power Worms/plastics Zoom Plastics and Yum Plastics Storm, Bandit, Rapala, Bass Pro(BPS) crankbaits Booyah, Stike King, BPS, Spinnerbaits and Bzzbaits. Booyah, Strike King and BPS Jigs and trailers I also usea lot of "homemade" spinnerbaits and jigs. I used to pour a lot of my own plastic worms but have gotten away from that now.

Well, here goes I almost exclusively fish Shimano Calcutta baitcasting reels I have a Pfleuger spinning reel I like alot. I fish nothing but Loomis rods. (they are like crack cocaine to fishermen, once you try one, you're hooked) I fish many plastics, but Zoom are what I fish the majority of the time. (Probably because a trick worm is my go to bait) I hate to say this, but to me, a spinnerbait is a spinnerbait, but I only use Bill Norman triplewing buzzbaits. I'm fond of any topwater bait, but my fave is the Nip-i-didee by Luhr Jenson (all wood bait) Can't go wrong with another old standby,,,A.C. Shiner 550 And I like all crankbaits, but have grown especially fond of Bandits, probably because they're not terribly expensive and they make every color known to man. Frankly, it's borderline sinful the amount of gear I have. Ask my wife!!!:jump:
spe690 Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 It's hard to beat a good old Zebco 33, some redworms, and a roostertail!!!:thumb:

I also forgot to mention Bill Norman crankbaits, they are very good. I am a member of the "over equipped club" myself:D . I know that I have lures that have never seen water.
94 Camel Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 Fellas, I have never fished with a Loomis. However, now that I own a couple of St. Croix Avid Series rods, I couldn't imagine worm fishing with anything else. I like my bait casters to be Daiwa's, and my Spinners to be Shimano's. My favorite worm to use is a Zoom trick worm in Watermelon Candy or Watemelon Red. My favorite crank bait is a Wee Bait with a blue back and orange belly.

The trick to attaining Loomis rods is appropriately acquired gift certificates to my favorite tackle shop for birthdays, Christmas, Father's day, etc. :thumb:

spindoc Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 How much is a Loomis? The ones that the dealer I frequently visit has some anywhere from $165 to $400. I have a few models that are in between. They are extremely lightweight, and incredibly sensitive and still have major backbone. I recently broke out my BPS rod and it felt like a log in comparison.

I just can't imagine a rod feeling any lighter and setting a worm any more like a piece of steel.
cvillecat Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 A 5500 Garcia with an Ugly Stick. Storm Crank baits and an old reliable Cisco Kid (shad color) Gitzit spinner baits Renegade plastic worms.(black firetail) Black Jitterbug Bear recurve bow topped with a Zebco 808.

I have one St.Croix, but it is for flippin' and it is a broomstick, probably not a good measuring stick for me. I particularly like the 6' GLX Loomis medium action I use for trick worms, with a Calcutta 50. It's my baby!!

It lasted two seasons, got a little bit of dirt in its interior, and completely seized up. I haven't bought a Shimano bait caster since.

I haven't bought a Shimano bait caster since. I have 5 Calcutta's and haven't had one seconds trouble out of them and fish them to death. Not a fan of low profile reels like the Chronarch for some reason or the adjustable braking system. Sounds like you may have gotten a lemon. I'd rather fish the calcutta than any reel.

I have not owned a St. Croix ot Loomis but I have friends that have them and they wuld not fish anything else. I have felt/casted with them and they are incredible light weight and both have the backbone. I guess I am going to have to drop hints to Mrs. OR, uh?

I have owned and fished shimano's in the past as well and have had some of the same type problems with all of them. Shimano makes a very smooth reel, no doubt about that. I just like and will stay with the reliablity of a Garcia. The more you use a Garcia the smoother it gets. I have never had any trouble out of any Garcia that I have ever owned (outside of a broken bail spring on a spinning reel). I own Garcia baitcasters (4500cb is my choice), spinning and spincast reels.
