Polarcat85 Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Man on first, batter hits the ball to second baseman, second baseman is playing in and the ball gets thru him and hits the runner going from 1st to 2nd. Is the runner out?

Is the runner out? If a fielder touches the ball before it hits runner he is safe. Clean miss no touch he is out.
STRIKE3 Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Actually, if the fielder "makes an attempt" to field the ball (fielding position or tries to catch it, with reasonable effort) and the ball then, makes contact with the runner....runner is not out, regardless if fielder touched ball or not.

STRIKE3, you are correct.

Strike3 is almost correct. He is correct unless the ball was untouched by a fielder, and there is another fielder in position to make a play on the ball. If this occurs; then the runner is out.
Diamond Dandy Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Same as a ball hitting the ump.....dead if it's in front of a fielding opportunity, live ball if it passes a fielder. Except in this case, ball is not dead, runner is out.

Polarcat85 Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 Fielder made the attempt, ball got thru and hit the runner and he was called out. Thanks for the information its what I was thinking.

Is the runner out? I would guess what would make this even debatable was the fact that you said the infield was pulled in. Thru the legs would be different than a smoked ground ball 2 0r 3 ft. on either side and a dive and no contact.

This is the correct ruling......regardless of any other attempts that may be made to field the baseball. On a side note, it doesn't have to be a ball through the legs of a fielder or a "routine" play. Reasonable effort is fairly ambiguous and is left open to umpire discretion. Ball is not dead when it hits runner, unless intentionally kicked.

However, in the stated example, I'm having hard time seeing where a defender would have a potential play so , most likely, the runner s/b safe.
