For those who watch St.X...

Featured Replies

While the new stadium for the Tigers is going to be a thing of football beauty when it is completed, is there a part of you that is going to miss old Manual Stadium?

I know for me, having gone to a number of St.X games over the years, I have only ever known Manual Stadium. There was something special about the place for the Tigers in my mind. Being the oldest all male(had to add that, I believe Pres is actually older) Catholic school in the city and playing in the most historic stadium just seemed appropriate.

What say you folks?

You don't need to be a St.X fan to respond, after all this thread was started by a Shamrock. :D

Manual Stadium has a lot of character but it is in dire need of a makeover.

I, for one, am very excited about X's new stadium and there will be no looking back for me.

I can understand that. Despite the problems with the stadium, for me, the history of it makes up for most everything (except for the lighting).

I will miss going to Manual stadium for the games, although part of it might have to do with my not wanting to be on St.X's campus if I can avoid it. :D

There are a lot of memories for Tigers young and old. There is a lot of character (the hillside, kicking PAT's across the street, the social gatherings end the endzones, Check's, Flabby's, walking back to X after a muddy victory down Eastern Parkway, etc.) that cannot be easily replaced. I think that all will miss it to some degree, but we're very anxious to finally have a "home" stadium. At least we'll still get to play a game against Manual every other year at Manual stadium.

Manual stadium held some good Male/Manual games in the past. St. X fans probably won't miss the the manual stadium at all. JMHO

There's something wrong with the lights at Manual Stadium?

I don't know if you are being serious or not. On a serious note, as a photographer it is my opinion Manual has the worst lighting of any high school stadium I have worked at.

I was joking. Here's the background: When Trinity first played at Manual 2-3 years ago, all of the Trinity fans commented on the poor lighting. The Manual contingent was in disbelief and maintained that the lighting was fine.

It is all relative to what you are used to.

The lights at Beechwood were bad when I played but as a player it was plenty of light to play in.

Uh, please.

The background is that Manual fans are aware that the lighting is poor, but we have to wait our turn for new ones, and most years they provide Manual (a power rushing team) with a slight tactical advantage.

Trinity fans, on the other hand, have complained ever since that they couldn't see their hands in front of their face in the pitch-black Friday nights of Schnitzelburg. Several Trinity fans have made a much bigger deal out of this than it is- while the lighting is poor for camera work, it's not so poor that you can't see.

Ease up Ram. I'm sure you're right, and I'm wrong.

I would have gone with 'lighten up.'

BuddyBW's analysis is spot on. There are a lot of memories involved. I attended my first high school game at Manual Stadium in the fall of 1959. That game featured the 1959 Manual Rams, considered by some the greatest team to ever play high school football in Kentucky, battling a powerful Flaget Brave squad. Over the years I have attended so many games there, and the memories blend and run together. I remember watching my first St. X-Trinity game with my best buddy in 1964. He was a sophomore at Trinity, and a typical high school student-absolutely certain that his school was going to prevail, despite this being the game that the Dicky Lyons returned from probation. Another great game was the 1967 Flaget-Owensboro game. Owensboro was 7-0 and unscored upon. Flaget would go on that year to win the state 3A title. Another game played there, in the late 90s or early 2000's (these memories blend as they fade) had Manual leading X handily going into the fourth quarter but inexplicably continuing to pass rather than run out the clock. X intercepted a couple and won. A number of wars between X and Male that I have witnessed surely left scars on the hearts of fans of both teams. I was at Manual Stadium on a Friday night in 1965 when Flaget snapped Male's 25 game win streak.

Guru, objectively you are correct. If the head and always ruled us, who would care? Often, though, we are controlled by the heart.
