Most Impressive Title Run in 4A History...

Featured Replies

This will likely change with the new 4A coming into existence this upcoming season, but I wanted some opinions from other folks here.

There are some impressive ones from many schools. Trinity has had a few, but while I love my Alma Mater, there is one that I feel tops ours.

George Rogers Clark, 1991. This team beat Trinity and St.X on their way to the title in 1991. While that in and of itself is impressive, what makes it even more impressive in my opinion is that they did it back to back. Few teams can claim to have beaten both schools in the same season, fewer still can claim to have done it back to back.

Thoughts?

I was at that game v. T & remember Clark running the wing-T to perfection & being extremely quick. I also remember T's TE running down the sideline for an apparent TD only to have one of Clark's DB's (Clay?) catch him & simply take the ball away from him & head the other way. Nonetheless beating both back to back was quite an accomplishment to say the least!

On a different note our 1994 (:D) was 6-4 going into the playoffs...we avenged two of those losses (Eastern who really wasn't all that good, and Central who had only lost to Male)....then beat a good N. Hardin team...and Boone with Shaun Alexander...not a bad run.

I think Trinity's 2001 run was very impressive. Look at these playoff scores:

Rd. 1: 60-0

Rd. 2: 56-14

Rd. 3: 59-8

Rd. 4: 50-0

Rd. 5: 45-19

:scared:

1982 Christian County won the 4A Title beating #1 ranked Mark Higg's Owensbore by 30 points and then beat undefeated Bryan Station team 28-0 that had three players who played in the NFL one who is in the Hall of Fame. Both of these games were on the road. They also spanked Oldham County on the road and then easily defeated Lou.Southern in the finials.

Has another 4A team won the title winning every playoff game on the road?

I'm going say no, and award Christian County with the most impressive run if all you say is true.

I agree it was a good one. We have had some amazing ones over the years, but I didn't want the majority of these to be about us.

That Clark team also beat Boone in the quarterfinals when the Rebels were putting some solid teams on the field. It was an amazing run.

Another notch in the belt.

Interesting topic. Any time a team that beats Trinity and St. Xavier back to back for the state championship must be given consideration for the title of "most impressive title run in 4A history".

Tigertalker, as I recall a kid named Chester Ford individually devastated a good Southern offensive line and held first-team all-state running back Jimmy Maddox and the Southern Trojans in check to bring home the 4A title to Christian County.

CentreRocks, the 2001 Trinity run through state was as impressive as any I have ever witnessed by a Trinity team. That team, by the way, was one game from an undefeated season. I attended several Trinity games that season, including their only loss, which I felt was to an inferior team.

While not the most impressive title run, I have said before that a book could be written, or a movie made, of the 1999 St. X march to the state 4A title, which perhaps could be considered "the most exciting title run to the state 4A title".

At one time that '99 X team was behind in every game of that playoff run. In the quarterfinals, the Tigers trailed a very good Male team on a rain soaked field at Manual Stadium going into the 4th quarter, then rallied to win. In the semifinal X trailed Hopkinsville 21-0 near the end of the first half. Saint X rallied, and on a third down and game from the 25 yard line with 14 seconds left, St. X completed a post pattern to a receiver who had not caught a pass all year. The state championship was also dramatic, with X trailing on the final play of overtime, then scoring on the last play of the game to win 34-31 over an Eric Shelton led Lexington Bryan Station. What a run!

That one wasn't half bad either. I won't lie, I felt certain Bryan Station would win that year. That group of Tigers just refused to lose. :thumb:

Diogenes I believe it was Jerry Reese who gave Southern fits. Reese played for UK and 5 years with the Steelers. Nobody scored in the first quarter that season against the colonels. One of the best defenses in state history!

You are right. When you get my age the memory neurons no longer fire as cleanly. :D Thanks.

In which case is that a self portrait under your name? :D

I think that at the present and at times during the past, beating T and X would be a requirement for a great run, but when I was in high school, T wasn't that good and X seemed good but not great.
