Yeah, that's why I asked baseballguy, because I figured he was there. From his description, it doesn't sound controversial at all.

 

Agreed. Its unfortunate for the catcher and his nose but if he's coming up the line to catch the ball and a collision ensues, its not a violation unless the catcher ran up the line, caught the ball, squared around, THEN got trucked.

 

It happened to Connor Larkin two years ago against Ryle. Same play. Throw up the line. He chases after it and gets freight-trained by Vince Murray and gets KOd. No call and rightly so.

Is Maloney starting for Dixie, his speed could be a major Asset if used in an everyday lineup, I didn't think he was playing because i heard he was just focusing on football.

 

 

 

He hasn't been satarting as of late, but def contributes to the Team. Dixie's Team speed is their strenth, for sure.

That was a terrible call and a terrible way to win or lose a game. First off, the runner should of slid home and second if your going to not slide you cannot touch the catcher at all or you are automatically out. (Not to mention that ball beat him to the plate by a good 5 steps). It looked like the kid was going to slap the ball out of Steuarts glove and got him right in the face. Looked dirty to me and the kid should of definately been out terrible call by the umpires. Hope Derek Steuart is ok...

The throw was right on the money from EJ Murray the shortstop. It was not a play where he caught it down the line and he didnt get trucked. The kid hit him in the face

Hit him in the face with what? I thought he got him with his shoe when his foot flew up in the air.Looked like an accident to me.If it happened the way you saw it from the stands I would think the umpires who were on the field would have made a different call. I hope EJ is ok and back real soon.

I'm just as confused as you. One person says the catcher caught the ball up the line, Maloney dove around him, and in the process, got the catcher in the face with his foot. Another person says the catcher was waiting at the plate with the ball and Maloney punch the catcher. :confused:

The catcher and his coach should learn that the mask that the catcher wears can be a very good thing to have on to protect yourself on such a play. The catcher, if he is wearing that mask doesn't have a broken nose but the runner surely would be hurting with whatever he hit the catcher with if that catcher is wearing that mask.... Lesson learned......

He told me (prior to this thread being created) that the ball beat Maloney to the plate, Maloney slid head first and Maloney's shoulder caught one of the catcher's legs which twisted the catcher around. The collision caused the catcher to drop the ball so Maloney was safe. He said that Maloney's foot which was up in the air as he dove for the plate caught the catcher's face as the catcher was twisted around.

That's pretty much the way I saw it as well. Only thing I would say different is, other than a slide head first, he kinda dove AROUND the catcher because he was in front of the plate. That was the ONLY way for him to 1. get to the plate, and 2. Avoid running into the catcher. The umpires made the right call.
