The only problem with your argument is that BGPpreppy was throwing the pitcher a new ball at the same time of the supposed interference.

 

Yeah, I took all the heat for this one. I wasn't going to use the on deck batter as a sacrificial lamb.

 

I know that this was not the correct answer, but we ended up calling a Mulligan. We called the two coaches together and all four of us agreed on a compromised... Do-over... Replay...

 

The logic used was the following.

 

1. First and foremost, I really booted the situation.

2. The batter struck out so he doesn't deserve first base.

3. The pitcher threw a wild pitch, so he doesn't deserve the strike out.

 

The next pitch, the kid got a base hit and naturally, the defensive team changed thier mind and didn't agree that it was a good compromise. I got heckled (well deserved) the rest of the game by the fan's. I am good friends with the home coach and we still laugh about the play over beers every once in a while.

 

You have reached a level of maturity when you can admit a screwup and get a belly laugh when you are the butt of the joke. :D

Just saw that this actually happened in the Cubs/Cardinals game today. Pitch was ball four and the runner overslid the bag.......umps got together and got the out.

OK bgpreppy, here's how this ump would've handled it...it wouldn't be pretty but I think it might be best...

 

You said the first base ump ruled 'swing' after the catcher (NOT YOU) asked for the appeal. Since you never asked for the first base umps help, I would've stuck to my original 'ball' call, brought the batter back to the batter's box and explained to the coaches that you didn't see a need to ask for an appeal.

 

Again, I know the cat's out of the bag, but at least you don't have to change a call YOU made.

 

Shame on your partner...no college level umpire should make a call like that unless asked by the home plate umpire for help.
