Do you have some kind of degree or certification to work at a funeral home or is it just a really odd job you happened to come across ? What do you do there if you dont mind me asking ?

My sister's ex boyfriend had dreams of being a mortician... Always found it kind of odd myself... But somebody's gotta do it.

I'm not a Funeral Director or Embalmber. I help do all other things. Dig graves (we use a digger but here in the hills it can get rocky so maybe a pick, axe & shovel come in to play), fill in the graves, set footers & stones, set tents up around the county for people who need them (not just funeral tents), mow grass. Maybe that's it. Weather can get nasty at times but it doesn't matter. You have to dig graves.

 

The way I came across the job was my freinds dad in the Owner of the local funeral home here in the county & about 5 years ago his dad asked me & a friend (along with the owners son) if we could come in & lend a hand on the weekends so we did. Now that I am out of high school, I go to college & work for him on the days I don't have class & on the weekends.

And what kind of money do you make, if you don't mind me asking?

Exactly. Not many people want to do it but just think, You will NEVER run out of business. Your "skills" will ALWAYS be in demand. It's not an attractive job but you get paid very well. Especially if you own the Funeral Home. The one I work at, the guy also sales Grave Stones or "Monuments". That's where the "real" money comes from.

Interesting stuff. Just wondering how you came across that job. Does it ever depress you being around death all the time ? I've wondered how people who owned funeral homes managed it. I think being around death and sadness all the time would depress the heck outta me.

Ummm, It's around $50 a day & I work 1-3 sometimes 4 days a week. Not exactly a hefty sum but it's good enough for a guy that does not have to pay any bills & it's not all that hard of work. Not like back in the day when all you had was your body and a shovel.

I hate my job... I want something else bad... I really dislike people in general too much to have a job dealing with people 10 hours a day... I talk to an average of 200 customers a day and get cussed out an average of 50 times a day so it takes a toll after a while... Not being able to say something back eats at me... If i didn't have my mute button, I don't know what I would do.

One weird thing though is the Owners mother lives in the Funeral "Home". She lives upstairs. I couldn't imagine doing that. Knowing dead bodies are a floor below you. She will probably live forever though with all the embalming fumes going up into the air. She will be preserved for ever.

I know a lot of funeral home owners who live in the home... Just seems too creepy to me...

Seems like a lot of Funeral Home owners live there also. I saw a show on MTV about it once. Something about living in a funeral home anyway.
