A coach can be hired and not teach a the school system.

 

I agree academics, is first and foremost, but the question posed related to a coach being hired and the selection committee.

I understand that. But the method that is being suggested in hiring a basketball coach is more stringent and involved than hiring a teacher.

Perhaps it's because, teachers can have specializations, degrees in related fields and follow a schools curriculum, while athletic coaches, often rely on what they were taught, observed or have acquired.

 

Athletics as you know, involve excelling physically and mentally, to achieve a goal in competition. The leader of a program, must have those qualities, which can instill in student-athletes, the ability to become better through practice, repetition, fundamentals, attitude and sport-specific training....Teachers can educate, without improving a student physically or athletically.

I agree with strike3. 4-6 members, preferably 4 members should compose a committee. One of the things a committee should look at along with the proven or disproven (?????) success of a coach is his/her ability to manage a complete program, budget, hiring asst. coaches, goal related planning, scheduling, etc. I like what strike3 said because it pretty well removes parents and boosters and brings in collectively people from different angles with different perspectives on what they are trying to acheive in both the athletic and academic forums. Take for instance, an AD, well obviously athletic success drives the passion of that person; a principal, well that person is in the middle of that fence balancing athletics/academics; and the super, well, fiscal is their middle name; and other coaches, obviously to see if the applicant is on the same page with the other coaches in the school as far as cooperation with gym space, weight facilities, booster accomodations,etc.

 

In short, keep in the school system. leave mommys and daddys out of it. For the most part even if they know the game their decisions are based on the benefit of their kid alone not the overall program grade 6-12.

I'm thinking All of the site base council should be involved in making this decision. No one else should have any influence at all. (Yeah right, like that will happen) The Principal has the final decision anyways, which is usually whoever the Super wants. So if you really want to know who should be at the interview honestly, just the Principal, they already know who they are going to hire when they go into the interview anyways!

Come on master. I dont think that I can go along with the idea that they already know who they are going to hire before the interview. Most people have a predetermined favorite but most commonly, the decision will be made either consciously or subconsciously within the first five minutes of the begining of the interview.

Who said the booster had to have a kid involved. Most programs in our area the most influential boosters don't even have kids in the programs. Without financial support of local boosters good programs are never great,average programs are never good, and bad programs always fail. As for a former player that is selected by the School Board, how could that hurt? Different perspective and less politics than with the Principal, Superintendent, Site Base or Parent.

It really comes down to the principal and the SBDM policy on hiring.
