I wanted to see what you all thought on this. If your school was hiring a new coach, who do you think should be on the selection committee?

Key booster opens up a HUGE CAN OF WORMS.

Superintendent has to approve the hiring, so in a sense, they will be involved.

A former player has potential to open up a can of worms.

 

The player and booster could put a stink on the hiring that would be unfortunate to start your tenure that way.

This is what I've always heard.

Or you could do like Whitley County and put a guy from the local radio station on the hiring committe, who has never played any football in his life.

He was instrumental in the Hiring of Roger Gentry. That really paid off for the Colonels.

I could go for one person from the site-based committee but that is it.

 

If you have hired a principal to lead the building and an AD to lead the athletic department, they should be entrusted to make this decision. If the two of them are incapable of making this decision, then they are incapable of leading the AD department and school.

 

For hiring a teacher (which is a more important hire to a school) they have, usually how many, principal, department head, and who else.

I think in some situations it could open up that can of worms (where you have irrational people involved that don't "get it"), but in the majority of situations, programs are not funded appropriately without booster support. I know that is not what coaches really prefer, as playing time always seems to be an issue with a parent or two. On the other hand every coach wants to have a program that is well supported financially.

 

I disagree with you that the booster club should not have input. Obviously it is the Principal's ultimate decision, but the booster club should get their opportunity for input because raising money to fund athletic programs is no easy task, as well as a key to getting the interest of quality coaches.

My concern is the perception of a parent of a player being involved in the hiring process.

 

And I again say if you entrust the principal to lead the building in the #1 focus of the school, educating the children without parents or a member of the PTA sitting in on the interviews of the teachers, WHY is it needed for a SECONDARY focus.

No, my understanding (as I have served on Site based Council) is that the ultimate decision of any hire at a public school, is the Principal's. The Principal can solicit opinions or input from anyone. My opinion is that the Principal should solicit input from boosters, because the way things are today, the funding of athletic programs as well as many other extracurricular programs is a public/private partnership.

 

The Principal can chose a dictatorial style of management, or manage by getting buy in and building consensus.

And I think that is political correctness run amok. You are not going to please everyone. And trying to just sits up a bad situation.

 

I see absolutely ZERO reason why a board member is involved. They hire the superintendent to represent them. So why do they need to be on their with the Super?

 

The Super approves the hiring (not does the hiring but has to approve the hiring) of the principal. If the principal is there to represent the views of the superintendent and the board at a HS level, why do they need to be on this committee?

 

We have all heard too many stories of school board members messing with the athletic dept because they are perturbed that their kid is not getting enough playing time. This simply feeds the fire of school board members involving themselves where they don't need to involve themselves.

A coach can be hired and not teach a the school system.

 

I agree academics, is first and foremost, but the question posed related to a coach being hired and the selection committee.
