Tournament Seeding....It's Time

Featured Replies

Just looking down some of the district matchups, I see a glaring need in this area. It is time for the KHSAA to set a mandate that all tournaments will be seeded, including the Sweet 16.

I have watched for years as the top two teams in a given district draw each other in the first game. Also, some of the Sweet 16 draws matched the top two teams (at least on paper) in the first round.

IMO, this just has to stop. Teams work hard all season, some are far superior to others and yet, they do not get the chance to move on because of a random draw. One team who has a losing record gets the chance to go to the region and that just is not fair!

What does the rest of BGP think on this?

How could you Seed the Sweet 16....It would be based off subjective opinions or rankings and the only way, I could see is done by a panel of members from each Region....or on a rotational basis each year.

I'm all for Seeding in Districts and the winner/loser format in the Regionals, works for me also.

I can see seeding the regionals.

I agree with the Ghost.

Random Draw baby! Random Draw...

Its the only way to go

Why is it "the only way to go? Gotta have more information than that to back up what you think!

Basically it is the same system for ranking the RPI of college teams. Not quite as complex, but still a better way than drawing a number out of a hat!

Well, the regionals kind of take care of themselves, each having a #1 and a #2, which makes the matchps easier. Mainly I am addressing the districts and the Sweet 16. If a team that gets the "random draw" #2 district, then need to get knocked out in the first game of the region (usually).

Districts should be seeded based on the regular season standings as the teams need to be rewarded or not rewarded for the type of season that they had. The regionals take care of themselves with the winner/runner up scenario. But for the sweet 16 I still like the random draw that adds to the excitement in it. Plus you can not honestly use the LIT ratings or Cantrell ratings to seed the state tournament as it would not give an accurate seeding. And you can not take a statewide poll as while the people doing the poll would be basketball knowledgeable (sp?) it goes to say that they may not be up to date on all the regions. IF you did seed the tournament then you would be handicapping the teams playing in the tournament as it would give them less time to scout and prepare for a certain region, as with now the teams in each region know if they win who they would play and that would give coaches a chance to scout in person and get more game tapes...which makes for more interesting matchups.

Just one man's opinion...but I could be wrong...

Good luck to all the teams this year in their respective tournaments...

RPI.... in High School. Let's hear your proposal, on how this would work for Owensboro, Louisville and Ashland area, for voters to accurately compare rankings.

Also, why not eliminate the Regional tourney and seed the district winners and play a 64 team tourney with a final 16 of the winners. Would be a much stronger sweet 16. Downside to teams in current weaker regions, but upside in a region where there are multiple strong district winners. Don't we want the best?

It would be hard enough to seed the 16 team state tournament as it is now. It would be nearly impossible to seed 64 teams from across the state.

As far as the Sweet 16 goes I don't see any justifiable way of seeding the tournament. Regional tournies take care of themselves with all the winners drawing losers. The district tournaments should be the same across the state. I don't believe that one district should seed while another blindly draws. I am all for seeding district competition, all though there isn't as much drama, it does give the best teams in the region the best chance of advancing.
