Big key is change of residence. If you physically move from one school district to another, you simply have to prove that.

If you are still living in the same house and want to attend another school, then you have some issues.

If your child was a MSer, then their school is not determined till their freshmen year, so none of it matters whether they have played HS or not. That is being looked at and may change though.

Once you play varsity sports, things become very cloudy on what you can do and what you cannot do as far as moving. Regardless, of what grade you are in, MS or HS , playing varsity sports outs kids in a gray area.

Partly true. Middle school players do not fall under the jurisdiction of the KHSAA yet. This is one of the issues to be voted on. Therefore, any middle school player playing V this yr can attend any school they want next yr, so far!

High school players playing V must have a legitamate move as someone has already stated.

The timing of moving and enrolling is also important. You must establish a new residence before you enroll in the new school (generally this is only an issue if you move schools in the same area). If I remember correctly, the issue at Highlands with Mitchell revolved around that very issue (correct me if I am wrong).

Here is link to ByLaw6, of the KHSAA....

KHSAA ByLaw6

Thanks for the link. Here is a loaded statement clipped from the bylaw regarding the exceptions to the one-year of ineligibility requirement after a transfer:

3) If the change in schools is motivated in whole or part by

a desire to participate in athletics at the new school; (then the exception is invalid)

Take a situation where a good or even better player is trapped behind a strong class a year ahead. Say it is a private school in this case. This player would be a starter at a lot of other schools, and the school in the district of the player's residence. The player, no matter what, will not get significant playing time until senior year. Concern is that this is most likely past the point of opportunity where this player can develop, obtain exposure and skills to gain college attention, much less be prepared for a successful senior year.

Any suggestions? Other than AAU and individual development, the KHSAA is letting this kid down.

This bylaw penalizes kids because of the actions of coaches or others associated with certain schools (recruiting).
