From what I remember, coach Cox left Tilghman because the new principal told him he had to start teaching. Coach didn't teach at all and put his energy into the program, which lead to PT getting on national television with the Mayfield game, and getting games scheduled with teams nationally ranked. He worked hard to get those things done. He told the principal that the program cannot maintain the current success if he started teaching. It was either teach or get fired. Coach was too proud to get fired so he resigned. @TilghmanPrideIf you have anything to add or correct let us know. Thanks.

That's how I remember it as I was told as well. I was still fairly young at the time, but going and hanging out at practices and talking to people even then, I usually got to hear about a lot of things.

One thing I remember vividly is the first practices I showed up to, I was terrified of Coach Cox. I was just an observer at that point, but I felt like he was staring directly at me when he went on some of his really good rants he was famous for even though he probably never noticed me. As intimidating as he could be, he was even more respected by his players. Lots of impactful stories still being told about him today.

Wow! That’s amazing I doubt anyone would have the information on this but would be curious if that’s the most ever.

We have a blow-by-blow record here on BGP going back to through the 2015 season. There are links to each of those years' Open Jobs/Filled Jobs threads in this year's thread. There were 54 jobs that turned over in 2015, but this year is the high-water mark for the past 12 years.

I'm working on cooking something up for the record of things going back to the early 1980's. Stay tuned.

I was able to trace coaching change lists back to 1979. This year's current 56 jobs that have turned over is tied for the most in that 48-year period along with 2005, when we also had 56 jobs turn over around the state - and there were 52 jobs that turned over the year before that in 2004.

Here's a thread with all of the year-by-year lists. It's a helluva list of great names!

If you look at that chart that C_W_B put in that thread about the past coaching changes, there's a big year that happens roughly once every 10 years. In the 80's the big year was 1988 when they had 42 changes, then it was 9 years until the big year from the 90's when they had 55 changes in 1997, then it was 8 years until the big year from the 00's when they had 56 changes in 2005, then 10 years until the big year from the 10's when they had 51 changes in 2015, and now it's been 11 years and it's currently the big year for the 20's with 57 changes.

Only other thing to consider is that many of these changes happen as a current head coach moves to another school and their vacancy has to be filled. That does skew the connotation of extreme turnover some. There may have been only 20 true job openings from firing, resignations, retirements, etc. If they hire a current head coach it then automatically doubles to 40. Longevity at one program is still a major concern with this though. Coaches' breath must get stale quicker in these places more now than before.
