I don't follow the NBA close enough to know this answer. Who was the last high quality NBA player that changed teams after their rookie contract? I don't think that ever happens in the NBA.

Several get traded in their last year of control if the team isn't willing to shell out the money to re-sign them. The NBA system is more conductive to players remaining than other sports. I could see that if he continues to grow as a player, a team like LA, NY or Boston (closest to his hometown) could make Dallas a deal that they couldn't refuse. So the fans need to enjoy him.

Dallas had a superstar in Dirk and always made sure they kept him. They had a superstar in Luka and paying him, they just had a GM that made the dumbest trade in history. Teams that has superstars don’t lose their guys after their rookie year.
