Halftime thoughts?

Notes taken entering halftime. Stop committing penalties!!! 

Penalties all over the place in the first half, including 3 personal fouls on Boyle County and 1 personal foul on Cov Cath. The Colonels with a 64 yard touchdown called back on a holding penalty. Boyle County with a handful of big runs called back on holding penalties.

Sloppy first half of football.

Cov Cath's defense needs to come up with an answer for JiDyn Smith-Hisel's running. He probably averaged 8 or 9 yards a carry in the first half...and it would have been a lot more than that if a couple of his runs hadn't been called back on penalties.

The personal foul on Cov Cath- I didn't see it. What transpired in the end zone?

Mistakes for both teams. Boyle County shot themselves in the foot on their first drive and last drive. Covington Catholic had a touchdown called back due to a holding call.

At the end of Boyle's last pass down to Seneca Driver, Driver and Cov Cath's safety (I think it was Cash Harney) got into it a little after fighting for the ball in the air in the endzone.

If I'm Boyle County, unless Covington Catholic adjusts and  Smith-Hisel is stopped I keep going through him. It seems like the Boyle County line is winning the battle at the line of scrimmage which is a plus for them. Second, I emphasize keeping the foot on the pedal. This is a Covington Catholic team that, in the prior round each of the last two years, trailed by two scores to Johnson Central - they trailed 13-0 in 2024 and 14-0 in 2025. 

If I'm Covington Catholic, emphasis on fundamental discipline. Cutting back of penalties. They were close in the first half, but just were unable to get one on the board. With how versatile the offense is, finding a way to get Harney or Gaiser the ball with some space to punch it in. Lastly, the opposite of the prior paragraph - they were down 14-0 against Johnson Central and came back to win, 13-0 last year. This is not unfamiliar territory.

Harney and Gaiser need to work on committing to their run and just hitting the hole hard. They keep stutter-stepping and looking for a bigger hole to "develop" and it's not happening (credit to Boyle County's defensive line). There were multiple instances where they would have had 4 yards if they just ran right out of the gate but they stutter-stepped and were held to a yard or so instead.
