Blueprint B: The 2x3 Model

Two classes. Three Divisions each. Six Champions.

This proposal condenses Kentucky football into two main classes —

  • Class 1A = current A, 2A, 3A programs

  • Class 2A = current 4A, 5A, 6A programs

Each class is then split into three divisions (I, II, III) based off hsratings.com (Top 16= Division 1, Middle 16= Division 2, Bottom 16= Division 3. That still produces six total state champions, but now with more competitive balance and fewer mismatched playoff games. No districts, 11-game regular season, playoff seeding based purely on RPI or rating index.  Schedule YOUR schedule, play who you play, fall where you fall. Perfect? Absolutely not. Arguments against? Absolutely, but the more you look at it and remove the conditioned, archaic way of thinking we've all fallen for ("More boys, better football" or "they have as many boys as a,b,c,x,y,z! Why aren't any better?" It's so much deeper than that.  Chances of this happening? Slim, but fun to look at.

Reference the PowerRanking Grid for this, Plan A and Plan C in the next thread (which, Ill attach again)...especially the smaller grid to the right.

Why it works:

  • Retains six titles for tradition

  • Narrows competitive gaps

You certainly put a lot of work into this.  So teams would not know which division they were competing in until the playoffs?

Bracket reveal show...would be awesome!

Correct, well, sorta!

Current classes 1-3 would be in Class A and Classes 4-6 Class AA

However, you’d just “fall where you fall” based off your ranking at the end of the regular season (11 game, even though these are the numbers per hsratings.com through our current 10).

So, the top 16 in Class A? Would be Class A D1, middle 16 Class A D2, bottom 16 Class A D3

Same for Class AA (current classes 4-6).

Ok I see what you were mentioning on your other thread, I like this one too. Gives me the All-A classic sort of feel that they give to the smaller schools in basketball.

Mississippi has a similar version of this blueprint in their current playoff format.

Allegedly Marshall Academy in Holly Springs, MS tanked one of their games in order to be classified in a division with an easier playoff road, thereby giving themselves a better opportunity to win a state title. The allegations of tanking include sitting starters and taking a knee at the start of the second half. I would imagine there are many more examples of teams trying to manipulate the Mississippi format—although likely less egregious.

The only thing I see that I don't like is CAL in A Division 1 is no better than the 3A now, just send them the trophy, why not put them in 2A Division 1 or 2 and let's see how that plays out? There rating is higher than anyone in 4 or 5A, take the current classes out of play, let the rating numbers fall where they fall, especially if you want to do away with districts and play whomever you want to play. Then use the ratings and as you say, "you fall where you fall" regardless of current class affiliation.
