Washington County Tornado 5/30/25

Featured Replies

At 6:49 a.m. (ET), the National Weather Service in Louisville issued a tornado warning for Boyle, Marion, Mercer and Washington counties.  In their bulletin, the NWS noted that a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado  was located nine miles east of Springfield, moving east at 35 mph.

This was part of a complex that moved West to East across that portion of Central Kentucky, starting before dawn on Friday. The first tornado warning was issued at 5:22 a.m., for Green, Hart and Larue counties, with the storm centered over Munfordville. At 6:03 a.m., another tornado warning was issued, which included Green, Larue, Marion and Taylor counties, located north of Campbellsville.

There was a very pronounced debris signature on radar this morning right around 7:00am in Washington County, so unfortunately I'm not surprised to see this amount of damage.

These are the warnings I received from this storm. It only took about 2 minutes for it to drop a tornado. There were no watches or warnings out. It shows that a storm can drop a tornado without any notice.

I understand that.  I mean what is it this year with so many tornados in Kentucky?

The unusual cool weather right now is part of the problem. That's why I've been watching next week. When the temperatures flip from cool to hot.

I think all would agree that this is a perfect example of where we need to always be "weather aware".  There is a tendency among many to be lax when something is "only" a severe thunderstorm warning.
