February 6, 200719 yr I believe Yount won it in '80 and '82. Ripken won his first of many in '83. Regardless, your stat is a little skewed since you didn't mention that the award wasn't launched until 1980. Yount already had 7 years in the MLB at that point. Important point you left out, IMHO. Again, you can compare Larkin to Yount until your blue in the face, but I can fly to Cooperstown and see (deservedly so) his Bust....you'll be hard pressed to do that to see Barry's anytime in the next 20 years. Good point that it wasn't launched until 1980 but noticing that his HR totals were single digits and his batting average was below 300, I feel comfortable in saying he wasn't going to win it before then. I think Barry has a better chance than McGwire.

THis could be seen as a testament that Larkin was seen as one of the best at his position year in and year out while Yount was not. Could also be seen as popularity and less publicity for Yount and back then, the Brewers were AL and not many dislodged Ripken. I wonder how many Yount made, as a CF. Larkin had certain qualities you look for, but my initial hesitation on him being a HOF player, is total hits.
February 6, 200719 yr Since baseball has been around there haven't been many SS's as good as Larkin. I think he certainly deserves to be in it. Had it not been for the recent spike in offense at the SS position (thanks in part to Larkin and Ripken) he'd be in. Writers LOVED Larkin, but he wasn't always appreciated by fans. He was better than Oxxie for several years before the fans voted him to start the all-star game. His numbers are combarable to a lot of the recent HOF SS's and he was better defensively than any of them except Ozzie. My thing on stats is I pick the top five to weight value. BA, SB, HR's, Runs, and RBIs. Larkin beat Yount in 2, beat Ripken in 2, beat smith in 3 (I think). That's pretty solid. He also had a better OBP than any of them and ALWAYS hit behin runners to advance them. He was a team player, always hustled, was LOVED BY WRITERS, and won some big time accolades. Before the recent offensive spike in numbers Larkin was almost a lock at first ballot.

In the years I listed above you could easily say that he missed 400 games in his career do to injury in 6 seasons. That is another 450-500 hits. That would put him within a season of a possibility of 3,000. Do you penalize a guy for injury?

However, Larkin's numbers stacked side by side with the entire list of HOF shortstops makes his offensive numbers look very good.

For me, HOF is about what you accomplished.

Yount averaged 1.1 hits per game he played (remember that included 138 games at DH and 1479 out of 2856 at SS). Larkin averaged 1.07 hits per game he played (3 games at DH and 3 games at 2B) Pretty similar production if your judging on production.

A pitcher could go 18-3, for two consecutive years and obviously avg. 18 wins per year....not worthy totals for HOF, even though ratio and production wise, it's exceptional. Larkin's lack of offensive total hits, was and is my main sticking point, on a player with that many years of service.

Who was he a teammate with at Michigan, former REDS player also. I can also say, they played differing positions in college....
