Featured Replies

The season has came and gone. We've seen teams seasons come to an end in the first round of the district tournaments and now we'll see even more teams seasons come to an end as we head to the regional tournaments.

Here's a look at the 14th Region Tournament.

BRACKET:

Where: Knott County Central Morton Combs Athletic Complex.

Dates: March 5th - March 10th.

- Wed. March 5th - 6 PM - Breathitt County vs. Perry County Central.

- Wed. March 5th - 8 PM - Jenkins vs. Powell County.

- Thurs. March 6th - 6 PM - Estill County vs. Wolfe County.

- Thurs. March 6th - 8 PM - Hazard at Knott County Central.

- Sat. March 8th - Semi-Finals 1:00 PM & 3:00 PM.

- Mon. March 10th - 7 PM - Championship.

MATCHUPS:

- Breathitt County vs. Perry County Central: This one will be one of the best first round games. The Bobcats and Commodores hooked up just a few weeks ago in Jackson. The Bobcats would prevail 60-54 but the Commodores have a lot to play for as they are the defending 14th region champions. Breathitt County comes in with a overall record of 21-8 (12-4 Region). Perry County Central comes in with an overall record of 17-11 (10-5 Region). Commodores come in runner up of the 54th District but they've won 5 of they're final 7 games. Breathitt County has won two straight and 4 of they're final 7 games. These two teams are pretty evenly matched.

- Jenkins vs. Powell County: Jenkins is having a historic season as they come in 26-4 and winners of the 53rd District, defeating Knott County Central. The Cavs have won 8 straight. Powell County comes in as district 56 runner ups and has an overall record of 16-11 (10-4 region). These two haven't met since the 2021 season.

- Estill County vs. Wolfe County: Both teams split the two regular season games. Estill County won 68-62 in Campton, Wolfe County returned the favor and defeated the Engineers 60-56 in Irvine. Estill County comes in with an overall record 14-15 (9-7 region). The Engineers have won two straight and three of they'r e final four. Wolfe County comes in with an overall record of 12-16 (8-8 region). The Wolves come in as 55th district runner-ups.

- Hazard at Knott County Central: Hazard, preseason favorite, gets battle tested early as they will take on the hometown Patriots of Knott County Central. Hazard defeated Knott Central twice this season both were 57-38. Hazard comes in with an overall record of 27-2 (19-0 Region). Knott County Central comes in 53rd District runner ups. The Patriots fell to Jenkins in the championship game. They come in with an overall record of 19-11 (15-6 Region). They have lost three of they're final five games.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Evin Eversole (Hazard) (Senior): One of the top two region players. Averages 19 points a game. Also averages 10 boards a game.

Austin Sperry (Breathitt County) (Senior): Preseason player of the region watch. Mr. Do it all for the Bobcats. In 28 games, he has scored 628 points this season and that comes out to 22 points a game. 75% from 3.

Chance Amburgey (Knott County Central) (Junior): Leads the Patriots with 13 points a game and shoots 36% from 3.

Braxton Terry (Breathitt County) (Senior): Another top player for the Bobcats. Averages close to a double double a game.

Casey Chaney (Estill County) (Senior): Mr. Do it all for the Engineers. Casey has scored over 1,000 career points in his tenure at Estill County. Casey averages 20 points a game and is just about automatic from the charity stripe.

Bradyn Sexton (Jenkins) (Senior): The senior averages 16 points a game for the Cavaliers.

Trayten Woods (Perry County Central) (Senior): 19 points a game. Mr. Automatic from the charity stripe at 88%. Also shoots 45% from 3.

RNAKINGS:

1. Hazard (27-2).

2. Breathitt County (21-8).

3. Perry County Central (17-11).

4. Jenkins (26-4).

5. Knott County Central (19-11).

6. Estill County (14-15).

7. Powell County (16-11).

8. Wolfe County (12-16).

Looks like another Breathitt/Hazard matchup in the finals. Hazard has beaten Breathitt Co four times already this season.

The player from Jenkins to watch is Cam Hayes, going by the few games I’ve watched them on stream. He put the Cavaliers on his shoulders and beat Knott Central in the district. And only a sophomore.

Does he have an older brother?

There is another Hayes on the team, a senior. His name is Adyn. I’m not sure if they are related.

For anyone to beat Hazard it would take the perfect storm. The Bulldogs would have to play terrible and their opponent would have to play great, and at that it would still be a close game. Hazard has a lot of weapons to use in their game plan. And their big Higgins kid who started all last year and most of this season until he was injured (he didn’t play in any of the All A region or state tournament games) is back in the lineup. He’s about 6’4, maybe 6’5 and looks like an offensive lineman, which he probably was for Hazard’s football team.

Breathitt Co can beat them, but have to score the ball better, Hazard is slow and wants to score 55 points!
