Mojocat Posted February 21, 2025 Posted February 21, 2025 What’s the difference between this and the other region teams and players/coaches of the year we’ve seen the last week or so? I think they are both voted on by coaches - maybe the other awards are voted on only by coaches in that region, and this one counts votes from coaches all over the state? Meaning, for example, a 9th Region coach might vote for the 8th Region player of the year, or whatever…..

You have to be a paying member of KABC and head and assistant coaches can be members and each get a vote. 1
Mojocat Posted February 22, 2025 Posted February 22, 2025 Ok, then I really don’t understand the difference between this coach/player of the year award and this one:
Falcon Pride Posted February 22, 2025 Posted February 22, 2025 KABC POY is for Seniors only. It also means that the player is a candidate for Mr. Basketball 1
Coaches Fan Posted February 22, 2025 Posted February 22, 2025 Josh Cook coach of the year 10th region. Very deserving and well over due. Since arriving at GRC his accomplishments speaks for it's self: 4-regional titles, 1-state championship and 1-state runner-up!! 1

From my experience as a voter for he Herald-Leader, the nomination process for region players of the year are not just open to the coaches within that region. Any coach, media member who has a Mr. and Miss Basketball vote, or past Mr. or Miss Basketball winner is invited to nominate players as a region players of the year. As a media member, I can nominate 3 players for each gender, regardless of whether I stick to my home region (the 11th). That way, I can nominate someone from the 11th, for instance, and then nominate any two other players I think should be a Mr./Miss Basketball candidate. Or I can just burn all mine in the 11th Region (I don't). Maybe that clears some things up? 1

Mojocat Posted February 22, 2025 Posted February 22, 2025 Yes, it does help - thx! I guess to make it more clear, I was wondering why the coaches in the 8th region for example last week voted Julian Miles POY and Simpson & Steiner COY, then turn around this week and vote Gutman & Boone players of the year and Levitch coach of the year. Talk about not being able to make up your mind. But I think what you’re telling me is different people are involved in the process, and maybe even different people do the voting…. 1
