I would like to base it however it makes the biggest difference but whatever it is, it is much different than it would have been under the old system.

The actual final playoff rankings by the committee was in this order Oregon, Georgia, Texas, and Penn State. So those four would have been the playoffs in the 4 team playoff system.

In the past have the powers that be always gone with the final rankings (thus those four teams) or did they tinker with it?

For the four team playoff, whoever was the top four in their final rankings were the playoff teams. Personally I would love to take as much of the human bias element out as much as possible. I think you have the conference champs get automatic bids. This way teams know for sure how to guarantee a spot before the season even starts. Then after the 5 automatic bids. Go back to the old BCS system to rank and seed the 12 teams. The teams ranked the highest that didn’t win their conference make it as at large.

I am stuck on 16, especially if we are going to be force fed teams like ASU and Boise State, but yes on the rest.

Honestly ASU is perfect example of why it being determined on field rather than by opinion is better. Obviously everyone’s opinion would have taken a two loss Texas team from the SEC over a two loss ASU from a supposedly weaker conference. Yet ASU was a 4th and 8 away from beating Texas in OT. I’m always for letting it be determined on the field.

If we are going the 12 or 16 route I assume ASU makes it in either way.  And fine on the five major conference winners.  Just seed it according to power rating, give everyone home games until the finals (or at least until the semi-finals) and roll.
