The Colonels led 42-0 at halftime and played their backups the entire second half against Campbell County's starters.

 

I was sitting in the Cov Cath section tonight and heard an awful lot of not-so-nice comments from the Camel fans being hollered across the field for Campbell County's head coach. Even as Campbell County's varsity was scoring in the second half against the Cov Cath backups, they were calling for him to "Play all the seniors, you already lost them their season."

Looking back historically at the last 30 or 35 years, Campbell County's football program has had an awful lot of rough seasons. Without looking, I'd be pretty surprised if their record on that time period was above .500, so realistically I don't know how much of the fans' ire is to blame on Coach Weinrich. To me it seems like there's as much or more to say about the environment within school's athletic program on the whole, and what support they are or aren't getting from community. Regardless, sitting in the stands tonight, the feeling of frustration and deflation was pretty palpable from the Campbell County fans.

How much of it is Location Location Location?  Do they bus all over the county?  I mean they are in southern Campbell County and kids from the northern part of Campbell aren't running from Dayton, Newport or Bellevue to go that far south.  Especially when NewCath and Highlands are much closer and have a far richer tradition in football.  Nice newer school, but who wants to travel there and back on a daily basis?

I would say this. More and more kids that live by the high school will drive to Kenton county or to Newport to get a better more competitive option.  When the administration and the coaching staffs never change the results stay the same.  Kids change every year. They are not the problem. Coaches and administrators are the issue there.

I laugh when I hear Campbell Co. Football fans blame coach Weinrich or any coach from the last 30-35 years for the Camels lack of football success.   The fact is to it doesn't matter who the head coach is, there just aren't enough good football players for Campbell Co. to be successful.   This isn't to say that the Camels have not had some fine players, just not enough of them to make a difference.  I look at a guy like NCC head coach Stephen Lickert who won at Dayton and Holmes, 2 schools where it's very tough to win at, but when he went to Campbell he had losing records.   He then moved on to NCC and guess what, he has had winning records every year that he has been there.  I understand Camel parents and fans are frustrated, but they have to realize that it's not the current coaches fault for being a losing team, especially when they've done nothing but that in the past three decades with the exception of maybe a just few years when they finished a game or two over .500.  I have no idea how a school the size of Campbell County with great facilities has enjoyed so little success. The ironic thing is Campbell County has enjoyed much success in just about all of their other sports.

I think hat was how he was able to build success at Dayton, Holmes AND Campbell County, and its how he has really been thriving at New Cath...one of the smallest football schools in the state. Most all public school football programs, especially, are cyclical with talent, and I think that was a lot of the reason why he had a few down years during his tenure at Campbell County, but only 3 of his 7 seasons (43%) at Campbell County had losing records, versus 2 of 3 seasons (66%) at Dayton with losing records, and 2 of 4 (50%) seasons at Holmes with losing records. So Lickert actually had more success at Campbell County than he did at Dayton or at Holmes.

I wasn't trying to play know-it-all there, by any means. I just think what Coach Lickert managed to do with the Camels goes to show that it's not entirely impossible to get a good thing going in football at Campbell County.

I completely agree with your point about how basically all of Campbell's other sports programs seem to make a better showing of themselves on a much more regular basis than football has. It's definitely a serious head-scratcher.

I know it.   I think the fact that Lickert had a successful season or two at Dayton and Holmes stayed with me and I forgot about the seasons which weren't so great. Lol.  I love the fact that you posted his yearly records at the 4 schools.

  I remember when Stephen took over at Campbell, I told some of their fans that he was a good coach and I remember towards the end of his tenure that many said that it was time for a change and we all know what's happened at CCH since he left. Some people asked me why he left for Newcath, and I said that he probably wanted a chance to have a realistic shot to win a state title.  This was  something that is never going to happen at Campbell County. 

Noteworthy from last night:

Cash Harney rushed 3 times for 101 yards, bringing his current season total to 1,002 yards rushing. Dylan Gaiser is closing in behind cash with his 6 carries last night for 89 yards and his current season total of 951 yards. Cov Cath has never had two rushers with thousand-yard seasons in the same season before. I think it's especially notable for these two since neither has played more than two quarters of offense in any of the past 6 games this season.

Dylan Gaiser & Cash Harney both became the newest members of Cov Cath's 100 point club last night. Gaiser's 2 touchdowns in the game brought his career total to 18 touchdowns, putting him at 108 career points scored and and in a 5-way tie for 39th, with 48 total members in the football program's 100 point club. Harney's 2 touchdowns in the game knocked him up into a 3-way tie for 36th with 110 career points. Senior kicker Andrew Weitzel, who joined the 100 point club club last year, is currently at 28th with 123 career points.

Campbell had John Schlarman as a head coach too until he left for Newport. Seems to be something in the water in Claryville.

Agree 100%.  Even their band program, which fields 100 kids…requires development from middle school through all four high school classes, and cultivates an environment of personal sacrifice and discipline for the greater.  Football can thrive in Claryville.

I think it boils down to the big guys in charge do not hold the football program accountable. Also, there is WAY too much parent control in that program. I know a lot of schools play you because of what your Last name is, but to a certain extent. Most winning programs will not take the loss, but CC will, just to keep certain people happy.

JHS, could you clarify a little?…..”big guys in charge”?  and “certain people happy”?  Kind of got my feeble old mind confused.

The band I heard was fantastic at half.
