Jenkins forfeits rest of season

Featured Replies

Just seen on KHSAA that Jenkins has forfeited the rest of the season due to Program Cessation. Whatever that means.

Really sad that another team/school has to forfeit their season.

Likely means that either due to injury, or people quitting, they no longer have enough players to field a team.

Inevitable, but still sad to see. Jenkins has struggled to field teams for several years now. They played just two games in 2019, zero in 2020, three in 2021, and none again in 2022. Last year they played a full ten games and had numbers above 20, albeit with a large senior class. They keep trying, and God bless the players and coaches giving it a shot, but I don't know if it will ever be back.

I appreciate the efforts of the adults at Jenkins trying to keep football alive. But it appears that this trend of having to end the program mid season my be creating more harm than good. Isn't this like the 3rd time this has occurred recently?

I think so. The 2019 team played on August 23 and September 13 before ceasing. In 2021 they played three consecutive weeks in September, with the season then ending on September 18.

Is there a possibility that Jenkins Highschool could ever be absorbed into Letcher County Central? The schools are only 15 minutes apart and it would allow student athletes at Jenkins and students in general to possibly have a better highschool experience whole also giving LCC a small enrollment boost.

Not sure. Don't know the ins and outs of how those communities and school systems interact with one another. It has happened to plenty of schools throughout the years. Maybe the best of both worlds could happen and they can keep Jenkins open as a sister school in the Letcher District but allow the kids to play sports at other schools.

City and county school systems often have pretty complicated histories though. Sad to hear this happened. Sad for the kids.

I don't think that is allowed. If you have a school and don't have a team, you can't play for another school. If your school drops the program, I do think you are allowed to transfer without penalty (this happened a few years back when Trimble County dropped football [they added it back the next year]; several Trimble players transferred to neighboring Carroll County).
