Belfry coming in with a record of 4-2, starting to hit their stride having won three in a row. As mentioned in prior threads, this is a bit of a different style Belfry team from what we're used to seeing since Chase Varney is on pace to throw for 1,000 yards this season. In his first five games he had more completions and attempts than he had in 2023. I can look back, but am unsure the last time Belfry had a passer that threw for 1,000 yards. Sani Warren came close a couple of times. This Belfry team slings it around a little more, but that strong running attack is still there with Jeremiah Austin, J.B. Woolum, and Ace Caudill combining for 21 touchdowns. Although Belfry has much of the last 20+ years, in 2022 Lawrence County picked up a 35-21 win over Belfry, their first win over the Pirates since 2002 and last season Belfry would defeat Lawrence County 14-6 at home. These two programs have had some exciting matchups in recent years.

Lawrence County has a record of 4-1 and although they have not had a schedule with the strength of Belfry's, they have picked up some good wins with their lone loss coming to Perry County Central who is 4-2. The leading player on the offense is Luke Fetherhoff, who leads the team in both passing and rushing yards. They have a nice, well-balanced passing attack that revolves around getting the ball to several different receivers. It's tough to just key on one particular receiver and have success. They have also scored plenty on the ground this season. Having seen them play multiple times over the past few years (but not this year) they are at their best when their defensive game clicks. Each team has their bread and butter. For Ashland it usually is their athleticism and speed that overwhelms opponents, for Johnson Central it is usually their physical rushing attack out of that wishbone. For Lawrence County, I feel like they are at their best when their defense is playing well.

This should be an exciting district matchup! What are your thoughts!

Closer than some expect.

Lawrence County staff knows how to coach to play Belfry tight. Lawrence also brings their best effort when Belfry is across the field.

I don't think Lawrence has as many horses as they have had the past couple years, but I think they have enough to make it competitive.

I'll take Belfry 35-14 in a game they have to score a late TD or two in order to close it out.

I think Belfry should win by 10+ Lawrence just beat Estill Co. by 1 on Saturday and East Carter defeated Estill 36-0.

Probably a mix of both of these comments for me. Belfry is definitely the better team, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Lawrence give a good performance and this be a competitive game in the third quarter.

7-0 Belfry late in the 1st

22 yard TD pass from Chase Varney to Cayden Varney on 4th Down to make LC pay for a lost fumble.

Belfry 14-0

10:43 in 2nd

Pirates march the ball down the field to make it 21-0 then a strip sack leads to a scoop and score.

Belfry 28-0 late in the 2nd.

LC drive continued when Belfry has 12 men on the field on a punt. LC throws a pick 6 after right before the horn.

5.1 seconds remaining in Half.

Belfry 35-0

Squib kick hits an LC player and Belfry recovers as the Half ends. Bulldogs have turned it over five times now with two turning directly into defensive TD’s.

The last thing Lawrence County could do when they have a noticeable talent gap and speed gap was turn it over.

Pirates continue to pour it on. They take the opening drive and score with ease capped off with Hunter Hylton getting rewarded for his defensive domination with an offensive score.

42-0 Belfry on a running clock in the 3rd.

Belfry starting to get that look about them. Offense has played well all season and the defense is starting to play more confident and starting to play more aggressive.

Not ready to label them a team able to compete with CAL, but this is a team starting to look like what you expect a Belfry team to resemble.

I don't know how much you have watched CAL but competing with them is a very tall task.  They are even  better than you think.

CAL is big time. I think anyone not named Boyle County may be competing for second in any class not labeled 6A that they are competing in.
