5A Greenwood (3-2) at 5A South Warren (4-1)

District season is here!  And we have an interesting matchup out of the gate in 5A District 2 with a stabilizing Greenwood squad traveling across town to take on a Spartan club smarting from their first defeat of the season vs a strong 6A team.

Greenwood Information

The Gators sandwiched wins vs Hopkinsville with recent wins over Logan County and Warren Central with setbacks to a strong OCath team and a tight loss vs a good Warren East team.  The Gators have roughly 1,000 yards offense through 4 stat games available.  Of those 1,000 yards nearly 900 of them are rushing yards.  SRs Cayden Schwarzkopf (500 yards and 3 TDs) and Jackson Freeland (127 yards and 5 TDs) have carried the load for Greenwood.  On defense, The Gators are led by 3 LBs (Jackson Freeland, Roy Bray and Kenyrin Coleman) lead the way with 35 tackles each.  I think Greenwood is improving but this is a big step up for them IMO.

South Warren Information

South has played well this season, but they ran into a buzz saw that I feel is growing in the Manual Crimsons, who remain undefeated on the year and seem to be flying below the 6A radar by most accounts.  From the information I gathered on the Manual v South game, Manual was able to put pressure on Star Spartan QB Bryce Button and caused multiple turnovers.  The Manual D was also responsible for getting the Crimson offense favorable field position which certainly helped out on the scoreboard.  But I would say except in the RPI perspective this is a great game for South to play to see where they really are and work on those things now before facing stronger district foes and going into the playoffs, as the rest of their regular season schedule (minus Bowling Green) probably won’t do that.

I did hear that FR RB Jamir Boards was carted off the field last night.  I hope the young man is ok and can get back to the team soon.

Game Preview

The Gators have 2 victories in this series (a 2016 with a 17-16 OT victory and the other was the 2022 Gator win when “Super-Gator” Lofton Howard powered Greenwood to a 35-21 win that earned the Gators the #2 district spot and sent the Spartans to the 3 seed and the road for the first round of the playoffs).

South has been high in the BGP 5A polls all year and I would guess that Greenwood is likely lurking in the 15-11 rankings in 5A if I had to guess.  I just feel this is a terrible matchup for this seasons Gators with little known passing abilities going against a very good Spartan front 7.  That spells a long night offensively for Greenwood in my book.  I look for Spartan QB Bryce Button to be pretty angry after the Manual game and look to take it out on the Gators.  I’d love to see a close matchup, but folks I just don’t see it.  Spartans roll.

South 49

Greenwood 14

Gonna be a tough on for the boys in green and yellow. Zero passing game + SW defense= long nigh offensively for the Gators. Unfortunately, I think South rolls.

South Warren leads 35-0 at halftime.
